Description
Reasoning behind the wilson trade - Devils want to add a tough top 6 guy for there cup run. Both on last year terms and devils want to resign wilson to a 5x5 for there cup runs to come. Caps get tofolli for the year and second rounder. Sign tofolli next year instead of mantha.

Devils decline, unless Toffoli wants out or isn't working in our system, and even then that's not a price I would be thrilled to pay for Wilson

As a devils fan with all that skill what's going to happen come playoff time? your boys are going to get pushed around and bullied and lose ultimately lose out early against tougher teams.

Bratt - Hughes - Wilson > Toffoli
Meier - Hischier - Mercer
Palat - haula - Holtz

Caps hard pass on that NJD trade. If they move Wilson, which is unlikely, it would be for someone in the Nylander tier.

So-called "playoff hockey" is a myth. The Devils tried to play "playoff hockey" and got smoked by the Rangers, then went back to playing Devils hockey and won 4 of the last 5. The only reason playoffs have that reputation is because the refs tend to put the whistles away, which doesn't mean you need to add grit.

Toffoli just got here. We will hang onto him.

If we need a face-puncher, we can find a cheaper one.

If Wilson wants to come here, we can explore that next summer.

I was thinking this would be a more of a trade dead line deal. Not right now lol, we will see how the first part of the season goes.. Obviously lots can change

Not one of our littles.

Our littles will battle your littles (Bratt vs Marchand, Hughes vs Aho)

Oh boy..... I love Hughes but trust me Aho is nails... Also Marchy would squish Bratt.. Again I love both Hughes and Bratt but terrible acrobats.

Maybe compare them to a Petterson?? or even a twig alien

This kinda thinking takes teams further away from the cup than closer to it.
If it's one or the other you go for skill, everyday of the week. Let loser teams like the Leafs or the Rangers double down on grit and toughness.

Now I'd be fairly disappointed as a Devils fan if they dealt Toffoli for Wilson as he's been struggling with some major injuries.
Huge question mark as to whether Wilson is anywhere close to the guy he was 2-3 years ago or if the weak level of play he showed in 22-23 is his new normal.
Toffoli is way more likely to be the better player between the two at this point in time so taking this risk as you suggest the Devils do seems terribly ill-advised to me.

Besides, none of those forwards you listed for the Devils there let themselves get bullied and pushed around. I mean Jack Hughes picked a fight against Sebastian Aho in last season's playoff series against the Canes. These guys have no need for a babysitter and especially when the tradeoff is Toffoli for Wilson.

This is actually not true iirc. The number of penalties per game tend to increase in the playoffs compared to the regular season.

iirc that's true at first but becomes less true later in a series and in later rounds. In game 7s and late rounds there's almost nothing called.

LOL what buddy...the dude was on track for 32 goals in a full 82 game season, and that's coming back from an ACL tear. Someone clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. Nice try though

Anyways, Caps easily decline.

Hughes fought Aho

Well Mr. All Knowing, Wilson was among the worst offenders in last season's Caps team in terms of getting outshot, outchanced and outscored.
For all his points and production the Caps were worse off with him on the ice than off it by all accounts.
I get that he's recovering from a serious injury but why should a team take the risk of trading a legit 1st liner for the hope of Wilson ever returning to form? ACL tears are no joke.

You mean the guy that came back from a torn ACL then got hurt again then came back to a team that gave up, all while trying to carry Kuz and Ovi. Last season analytics for him need to come with a BIG asterisk.

This is pretty much the point I'm making.
Between the amount and significance of his injuries and recent poor level of overall play, why should any team bet a 1st line winger (like Toffoli) on Wilson ever returning to his prime?
It's a stupid amount of risk to take that OP suggest the Devils should do and I cannot make it make one bit of sense for them.

Just keep Wilson then if you believe he'll be so great in 23-24. The Devils are satisfied with their guy.
