Any rental for rental trade between these two teams would start with Pesce (maybe end with him). There's no reason for the Leafs to give up potentially one of the best rentals for lesser pieces that don't even fit well. Teuvo would come in as Nylander's roster replacement but who knows if he will have a bounce back or not. Skjei is joining a crowded left side, even if he's considered an upgrade Leafs would be better off with adding a RD that would allow Brodie to move to the left side if need be.

A more reasonable deal would be Pesce+Teuvo @3-3.5M for Nylander with Carolina paying a 3rd team to retain.

I don't know about fair but something like that seems more plausible. Probably add a few picks on either side and maybe Timmins who CAR waives).

It would likely be a mistake on the Leafs part since by the end of it CAR would end up more improved than them unless Teravainen has top 6 production next year. That being said, often in the NHL, at least one side ends up losing the trade.

It would probably be a bad trade for the Leafs and the Hurricanes have made a living winning these kinds of trades.
