There is no way that Winnipeg is getting "a lot more than that" this for a goalie that is unrestricted after this year and not re-signing in Winnipeg. Don't let him walk out the door for nothing.

I think this is close to fair value, but I'd think the Jets would rather want a younger prospect like Chase Stillman or Nolan Foote than Curtis Lazar.

I actually made an account to respond to this tomfoolery. The return on Hellebuyck will likely only be a goalie + a 1st at the deadline. Any trade that the Jets make before the deadline will simply have to involve more. The "more" in this case being an LD prospect that the Jets don't have room for (take a look at our depth chart and you'll see) and a healthy scratch / bottom six FWD that we'd probably end up waiving anyway. This trade doesn't entice the Jets to move Helle before the deadline.

Only Winnipeg fans think a trade like this is unrealistic or "tomfoolery" is it? Hellebuyck is leaving, he wants to win or a least a chance to win. In Kevin Cheveldayoff you trust, right Jets fans?

The return will probably be predicated on how much Hellebuyck wants to be extended for. If he believes he's a 9.5M goaltender, the return probably won't be that great because you've kneecapped your market.

When Hellebuyck decides he's more of a 7.8 * 5 guy or whatever, he'll probably get the equivalent value of a mid first and a second round pick in terms of value. And no, that's not Dawson Mercer or Simon Nemec. Dawson has significantly upped his value since being drafted and would go much higher in a redraft.

If NJ still had Mook, he'd have been a good piece to send their way.

I mean Winnipeg just traded PLD, who is a similar contractual situation to Helle, for Vilardi, Iafallo, Kupari and a 2nd.... I'm not sure why you think we would only get this haul from the Devils.
If Winnipeg was to hold Helle until the trade deadline, and a team like Toronto or Edmonton really wanted a goalie for their playoff run... do you not think winnipeg could get more than that from them.....

This trade is realistic, a realistic deadline trade. There is no reason why the Jets would move Helle now for it when they can get ~35 more games out of him first. To trade him now for this return would indeed be tomfoolery, not to mention that the added pieces on top of Vitek and the 1st are all pieces the Jets don't want or need. See you in March.

Hellebuyck and Dubois are not similar situations. The only thing similar to these guys is they want out of Winnipeg. Dubois' trade involved a sign and trade and they still didn't get a 1st round pick. The other pieces are better in the Dubois trade because there is more overall upside for Dubois, he just turned 25 years old.

I don't think Winnipeg is getting more than they got for Dubois for either Hellebuyck or Scheifele. I hope neither one of these guys get injured before the deadline, if Winnipeg is intending on holding onto their assets.

Dubois to LA and Wheeler to NYR, I think these guys are both happier and they get the chance to chase the cup.

Apparently getting out of Winnipeg, by finishing a full term contract, is like finishing a prison sentence. Just let these guys go on good behavior.

I mean, the team has rights to the player until July 1st 2024. To me that sounds like a similar situation. I agree with you that the returns for Scheif and Hellebuyck won't be as big as Dubois. The value to the Jets in this offer doesn't come close to the Dubois trade though. The Jets are trying to win, just like every other team. A trade before the deadline would need to make the Jets a better team this year.
