Van - CbJ at the draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Julius_Freezer</b></div><div>Boqvist has almost no value and KJ has stagnated in Columbus, how much value does he really have? I admit VAN probably has to add more but I also feel like CBJ fans are significantly overvaluing Kent Johnson....</div></div>
If Boqvist has no value, then why would the pursuing team want him?
And your argument with KJ only works when he's 25 years old, not when he's 21.

I like Tuch but this isn't happening. Tuch is near and dear to the city I think, and this is nowhere near the value Buffalo would sell him at.

Who says no
Both teams say no to this one account of a: the encyclopedic nature of it, and b: Anaheim thinks Zegras has more value than he does, and c: NJ would never buy Zegras as per he's the wrong player type... if they wanted Zegras, Bratt would have to go the other way, and frankly, I like Bratt more as he knows he's a winger and is a more 2 way player.

Preds sell high on veterans to free up space for younger players in offseason
Nyquist is the wrong player type and McDonagh... well NJ's probably using their cap space for a good LD this summer and don't need to entertain trade options until July.

Devils need a goalie
Kahkonen is expiring and he'll be asea after that...
The AHL pieces won't be desired.
The picks... well that's all I'd have offered them. Then I would have hunted for another goaltender for a 2nd and maybe an okay prospect until I got a team that said yes.

Markstrom isn't getting Holtz. Calgary is either going to trade him off at seller's value or he's going to spoil another one of their draft picks. Because of him, they're going to draft like 12 instead of 5 or 6, and this is a year you really wanted to draft in the first 5 or 6 cuz there are some stars at the top 6 of this draft.
If Holtz was ever offered for Markstrom, Markstrom would have been a Devil by now. Conroy's management of that guy is like Ray Shero's management of Corey Schneider... just wasted asset management because Schneider was hurting their draft picks.

Montreal still needs Matheson more than they need to trade him... they just need to trade off some prospects
With Matheson and Hutson, they'll have a decent breakout... they defend those guys with Savard, Xhekaj, and Kovacevic... maybe they let Savard go but I don't really think they should... maybe use Barron to fill in 3RD role, and you basically got Guhle, Struble, and Harris who are disposable. Guhle has mid to late first value, Struble you might get a 3rd or 4th rounder for, and Harris is barely better than scratch value. Mailloux can compete with Barron for 6th D role next year.
Guhle and Hutson are basically competing for the same spot in the line-up, and really Hutson has the higher ceiling, which is 1D where Guhle is more 3D ceiling, maybe 2D on a so-so team. There's no reason to let a good defenseman go just so that you can develop a guy to be as good as the defenseman you're letting go.
And D won't develop right if they're getting shelled cuz you deal all the vets away...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>penguinswin</b></div><div>Fair enough. I appreciate the logic train. I guess it depends on where CBJ sees itself going with a new GM TBD. And how Gaudreau sees himself with that direction. Most likely if he wants out, he can pick between east coast area teams that are contenders for playoff spots, but the cap might prevent most of them. I see PHI - who wasn't interested before and BUF as the most realistic options, unless someone makes a serious salary dump. Maybe if BUF dumps Skinner's contract to someone that it might work with a prospect/ pick package? Just trying to think outside the box</div></div>
I draw a ring around NJ because he didn't want to play there, but he wanted to be close to there... just not there. If that logic rings true, Philly and the New Yorks are too close, though I know he entertained Philly. That ring would be Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Nashville (I'm not sure he'd go to a western team), and Washington... maybe.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>penguinswin</b></div><div>True enough, but getting a RHD for a younger LHD prospect is a reasonable flip. And Gaudreau has100pt potential with a real 1C, which BUF has in Thompson or Cozens compared to Jenner or Sillinger.... and then beef up in another deal or UFA addition... thoughts?</div></div>
- if CBJ is selling these guys, they'd sell them in separate transactions. It's exceedingly rare that two key players from one team goes to another team. It's one key player for one key prospect, and then one side or the other adds a little bit to square off value.
- If CBJ is selling Boqvist, I'm not sure Buffalo's the team that's buying.
- If I'm Buffalo, I'm hunting for RHDs, but I'm looking for someone with good speed and size, and uses his size to win puck battles on the boards and plays with an edge.
- CBJ probably isn't selling Gaudreau, but if they were in a hypothetical situation, sells aren't hockey trades. It's not going to be Skinner. It's going to be for a young talent and more assets to square the deal. It'll be a low price if Gaudreau pulls a Rick Nash and names off a single team, but it'll be a better price if he gives multiple options.
- Boqvist and Gaudreau being sold, CBJ's going shopping for the best price they can possibly get, which takes a while, and won't be a hockey trade like this one is.

Guhle for Mercer
Guhle makes no sense for New Jersey. The youth of their D corps got absolutely exposed this year, and Guhle does not solve that problem.
It also makes no sense for New Jersey to trade Mercer. He's one of two players on their team that's half decent in front of the net... three if you count Hischier, but Hischier is utility.

Deal or no deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>Anderson is a cap dump. Get to 50% retention and then he’d be of interest
Xhekaj can’t kill penalties. What’s your plan there besides sticking Luke on the PK?</div></div>
Play him with forwards that actually pressure the play as per Montreal's PK is lousy at this, which is why their PK sucks.
I'd settle with 20% retention on Anderson. NJ needs utility forwards in the worst kind of way and he's one of them.
NJ won't get Xhekaj, I don't think, but Anderson might be one of their targets in the summer if he can be had affordable, but K Hughes is a tough GM to deal with, so they might not get him either.

Deal or no deal
Not bad, but no to Harris.
Fact is, though, that Anderson would be good on New Jersey; he's a fast player, dumb as hell, but they don't need him to be smart... they need him to play with Jack Hughes so that Jack doesn't have to dodge bullets at the blue line every game when he tries to cross it. His worth given his contract structure, probably a pick between 20-30.
Holtz, though... he's a high pick and still worth where he was picked for his goal scoring ability, despite NJ being a super soft team and unable to give him space to do it.
NJ does not need defensemen left side or right... the only guy that would be of interest is Xhekaj as per they need more attrition on their team, and few players bring more of that than him.
