Description
I like Chychrun, he's much younger than EK and has Ottawa ties. He will probably want to extend. But he's LHD, like Chabot, Sanderson, Kleven and Brannstrom. But this is about bringing EK back to Ottawa

Sokolov and Thomson are not "throw ins", they're pretty decent prospects but can't see them having a proper opportunity in Ottawa. I think Sokolov would fit with what Grier is looking for

Term is what convinces Tatar to sign at this AAV. He's 32 and sees a real chance at a Cup with Ottawa

Pinto signs a short bridge and will look for a long term contract next season (as the cap rises)

If you guys are so stacked at LD, then why did Dorion trade for Chychrun in the first place?

Chychrun was traded for a 1st and (2) 2nds, so the value is here, but definitely without Zetterlund or Joseph included. $5.5m retention is likely a non starter, but two solid prospects and the equivalent of a 1st and (2) 2nds is probably not far off of what it would cost at that retention level.

Where it gets sticky is Chychrun. He's an excellent player for sure, but San Jose is also overloaded at LD. He would be our immediate #1 for sure, but LD is like our area of least need in the rebuild. Far less enticing though is that he's only under team control for two more years. That is well before San Jose's rebuild will be done and the risk that he walks in Free Agency OR that to keep him we have to overpay on a big money 8 year contract until he's 35 is too much.

Chych was traded for 1st, THREE 2nds, and a 3rd.

OTT HAD to dump Zaitsev at the same time, and ARI wouldnt take him without increasing the price.

Dorion seems like a moron. He should have known if DeBrincat would extend in Ottawa before he ever traded for him.

Maybe the next owner should fire Dorion and hire me. I probably cost a fraction of his executive pay.

Solid offer for Zettertank and that other guy.

But if I were Grier, I’d want a couple long-range pieces (picks or younger prospects). If they could flip Chych, maybe that is best route.

Good question! If you knew how many times I have questioned myself about Dorion decisions. This guy has been ruining my NHL experience for like 3 years now, and I would say it's the first time it happens in 30+ years.

So let's look at this :

https://leftwinglock.com/players/index.php?p1=JAKOB%20CHYCHRUN&flag=y&tpoppp=tppp

He can play RD but does that mean he is good on that side? What are his metrics left vs right? Does he even want to play there? One guy will have to do it for sure

Not saying it was possible but I would have overpaid to get Brandon Carlo... big mobile RHD, exactly what Chabot has been needing for years.

I messed up a little bit, wanted to have it at 4.5 retention, could even be 3.5 retention (and then the Sens wouldn't be able to sign Tatar, in both cases)

Most of the value the Sharks would get is from Chychrun who is much younger. If they are going for a long rebuild, then yeah you trade him for the best haul you can. Ottawa paid 12th OA + two 2nds + 4th (Zaitsev dump included)

If you keep him, trade another LHD for more assets.

It's true that his next contract becomes a worry but in that case you trade him with an extension in place

Yeah the idea would be to trade Chychrun depending on what the Sharks want to do
