Gibson is a liability as is consistent with all trades made this offseason on age declining vets on expensive contracts. I would tell them to either attach assets or eat that brutal contract.

Not worth the argue. Buffalo fans are for some reason the biggest Gibson haters on the planet. I’m sure NJ would be happy to take him instead

He’s had a few down years,
has a lengthy contract,
and will cost a lot to get

Idk what’s to like about ANY of that dude?

Look at it in this position. Teams like Buffalo and New Jersey are still in a running for the two goalies on the market: Hellebuyck and Gibson.

Many people around the league believe that Gibson is still a top goalie, but that he’s trapped in Anaheim’s mediocre system and horrible defense. Many believe that given the opportunity to play against a contender with a good defense: he will return to his regular form. He’s making 6.4 mil a year: a bit high for him now but fair for an elite goalie.

Now let’s move to Hellebuyck. Besides that fact that he will cost more than Gibson, he will be a free agent next offseason. It’s projected that he will want a 9.5 million a year for 6 years long term going into age 31.

A 31 year old making 9.5 mil for an additional six years is a lot more risky than a 30 year old making 6.4 mil a year for 4 more years starting this year.

So the argument that Gibson is expensive doesn’t highlight that fact that Hellebuyck will be way more expensive, financially and trade wise. Not to mention that Anaheim even stated they were willing to retain on Gibson’s contact..

But it’s not JUST Gibson vs Hellebuyck
We seem more than comfortable to acquire NEITHER

Which is what I think the road Buffalo should take. Devon Levi is going to be a stud. Buffalo should sign someone like Martin Jones to a one year to do a 50/50 split through the year until Levi is ready to be a full time starter. If Buffalo is fine being patient with Levi they should absolute not trade for a goalie unless it’s a 1A / 1B system

It seems like we are comfortable going with a group of
Levi/UPL/Comrie
At least to start the season

Doesn’t look like we are in a big hurry to overspend on a guy like Gibson, who has legit questions about how good he still is (or isn’t)
Or for Hellebuyck, who is gonna demand a huge extension

We talked to both teams, and (at this point at least),
we walked away from the asking prices that the Ducks & Jets wanted

If Hellebuyck would sign a 3 or 4 year extension,
then I’d be all in for him- even at a Cap hit of $8.5mil +
But i doubt that he’d take an extension for that few years,
so I’m writing him off for now

Gibson has too many questions about his play, for the length of the contract he has left- so i don’t think he’s a realistic option either

I really think the Sabres go with the kids & Comrie,
and see what we’ve got
