just curious on what the disbalance is ?
and I dont know why theres so much yapping about Presce..? hes just a dude (3 to 4 Dman)
he excels in Canes system..would not be as good somewhere else..especially in Toronto.
Jarvis expected to be a 40 to 45G scorer like Willy?
personally I want us to keep Willy
just looking for lovcal insight (as most of us have blinders on when discussing our own players, I include myself of course..don get to watch Canes games unless theyre playing Leafs)

Pesce>Lillegren
Jarvis>Nylander

Leaf fans overrate Nylander incredibly, he is a pp scorer who floats around 90% of the time there is a reason noone wants him(especially for what the leafs think they can get)

Nylander likely wants $9M, Pesce most likely wants $6-7M.

Nylander is a top line winger with 1yr left at just under $7M. Pesce is a top pair RD with one year left at $4M.

The difference between 1yr of Pesce and 1yr of Nylander is most certainly not Seth Jarvis still on his ELC.

Canes laugh and tell the Leafs to find some other team to bail them out of their cap issues.

every fanbase over rates their players, no exceptions
I want willy on this team..if not for the cap and teams like ours having to fiancially support those broken US teams we wouldnt be having this conversation.
but I digress..the best Hockey in my mond doesnt include parody..Oilers, Isles, Habs dynasties is what people remember..only exception would be TB..but they play under different rules since they have tax benefits Canadian teams dont..I wonder what the league would look like if (I dont know if this is actually legal) all salaries were paid out from nevada or another tax free state to make it a level playing field (the parady they crave)..or we should have a higher cap to make up the difference..a dude gets 9M in florida and the same dude needs to make over 11m to take home the same dough. smfh good job gary

They should absolutely do something about tax differential wouldnt be hard to offset the salary cap by provincial/state tax. But Bettman will never do that since it benefits his warm weather USA expansion

My boy Spock nailed it. That’s the imbalance. Cost control is extremely important for long term success. And canes, probably more than any other org, value it highly.

leafs are definitely not cost conscious lol..that JT signing handcuffed us for years (and the whole shutdown thingy)

Yeah it’s def a little tough to blame all teams and gms since it was a once in a lifetime event that handcuffed most of them. Although some gms wouldn’t have had the foresight even if you told them there would be a cap lock for a few years lol

But that’s just baked into the canes strategy. They’ll spend up to the cap (or over it with LTIR) every year but they won’t overpay on guys likely to go down during the life of their contract. That’s why they try to lock up guys early as they enter their prime years versus guys exiting theirs. I’d expect Jarvis gets locked up next year to a long term deal for example.

You pay taxes on where the income is earned, so only 50% of any salary is taking advantage of 0 state tax states. In addition, the majority of taxes owed in the US are federal, so the difference between a player's take home salary in Florida vs New York are not nearly as large as you might think. The top tax bracket in Canada is a bit higher percentage, but at that point you'd have to get 25 owners to agree on a US team penalty and that'll never happen. This is also ignoring players like John Tavares who want to play in Toronto and will take a pay cut to do so (It was rumored if he resigned with the Isles it would be for 14M, no?)

Also the revenue sharing that props up teams like Arizona and Florida now was instituted by Bettman to keep teams in Canada during the 90s when the Canadian Dollar was not nearly as strong.
