Detroit has a ton of cap space and they will want to take the next step. That’s why all the rumors of them going after TK. They also get a puck moving dman to help them further as they are relatively thin on the back end after Seider
Detroit won't eat cap space simply to eat it. Rumors of going after TK are about Detroit trying to improve and him helping them do so, same as DeBrincat, etc. The goal is to build through the draft and add supporting pieces accordingly. Number 9 this year will be more valuable to Detroit longterm, as I am sure you understand number 7 will help Philly. Konecny isn't the answer to Detroit's problem.
As of this moment, Chiarot is the worst contract on Detroit. How many teams would kill for that AAV and term to be their "worst contract." Krug would replace that even though he is the better player. Why lose the best piece (#9) and add an anchor to the ship.
VAN pick could land Detroit a decent project in Danny Nelson or Strbak, so that as a need filler is also a loss.
Maata worked wonders for Hronek, and was given an extension because he is something missing from the team. Re-signing and moving him is a great way to dissuade FAs from signing in Detroit, especially when he helped the rebuilding team that he came to in the first place.
