Trading a 1st round pick and a young cost controlled center for a 30 yo rental. Very on brand for the Canes FO.

You should. Take a look at the Hurricanes contract situation. They have only one year left of true Stanley Cup contention before they need to rebuild. They will still be good but nowhere near as good and maybe not even a playoff team. Getting Scheifele lands them a proper Stanley cup 2c. If they resign Staal they’ll have a better 3c than KK. With Scheifele they only need a proper goal scorer and one of Raanta and Andersen to be set up to win it all

Look at their contract situation. They have 3 players signed long term. Kotkaniemi is one of them. He's 23, and is a defensive monster. Carolina have been successful with plug and play parts before. Trocheck, Nino, Hamilton, DeAngelo were all easily replaced. They'll re-sign Aho and then they'll be fine. They'll still be a Stanley Cup contender and they'll still have absolute mounds of cap space. Then when the cap goes up, they get to re-sign Slavin and then they can use the deepest prospect pool in the league to supplement their losses. There's no bluechip prospects in the Canes pool, but they have so many guys that can fill in on the back end and up front. They're going to be fine. If what you see is pending regression, maybe you need to look closer

You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about lol. They’re setup for long term success and extremely flexible. They’ve got their core in place and extending the guys necessary this summer, plus have a ton of cap space flexibility and assets to improve around the edges continuously. Your response couldn’t be further from reality.

Canes pass and not particularly close. Not giving away a cost controlled center whose floor is a high end 3C, that contract is turning into a bargain, especially when cap jumps next two years.

Wouldn’t move the first by itself for Scheif. They’re not interested in the player and would have no intentions of extending him. Look elsewhere for a good return.

No chance the Canes do that.

There's just way too much going on in that Kings trade.. lol
I like it for the Jets but can't see LA doing it.

That defense is tiny, would get run out of the rink.

Why do so many Jets fans want to give Barron $2M or more, the guy hasn't proven anything to warrant more then a $900K bridge deal.

One more trade then. Nate Schmidt for Colton Parayko. The Jets do it to get bigger on D and roll the dice that Parayko’s game hasn’t really fallen of a cliff like his play last year suggests and the Blues do it to save cap space and because Schmidt is a bad contract for 2 more seasons whereas Parayko is likely a bad contract that’s more expensive ($6.5 million AAV) for 7 more years.

Kings aren't interested in DuBois no matter how much Jets fans and local media wish it, and Los Angeles isn't giving up Byfield or Vilardi for Hellebuyck.

Ask Blues fans about that, they'd likely say they'll keep Parayko and then there's both guys have trade protection, likely not an issue with Schmidt but probably would be with Parayko waiving for Winnipeg.

A couple smallish dmen is fine but having 3 or more is just not a recipe for success, suppose it'd be fine for tanking though.

You might be secure for the moment but don’t be too confident. Aho signed an offer sheet if you remember and might not be too keen on a team friendly contract. You lack depth to replace Skjei and Pesce and if you try resigning them you will realize that the cap space will run out fast. Calgary was set up for the future last season and now they are in disarray. It can change fast and the only thing that needs to happen is if Aho says goodbye

I understand your confidence but what I am trying to say is that Carolina wont win the cup without a more potent offensive threat. They’ve been one of the best teams in the regular season since Svech got drafted more or less but only decent in playoffs. No big wins but plenty of disappointing losses. I can see a future where Carolina continues to be great for a long time… But not cup winners and that’s what it’s all about. Regarding losing out on long term by going for it; There’s plenty of prospects and draft capital that could be invested in win now trades without damaging the future

So I guess the many hockey insiders indicating the Kings are the front runners to get Dubois are all wrong then. Also, one of Byfield or Vilardi is the main piece said to be going back to Winnipeg.

But I guess your sources must be better.

Pionk’s remaining contract (2 years @ $5.875 million AAV) is similar to Schmidt’s contract, so he’s another player that could be dealt for Parayko for the same reasons I stated Schmidt could be appealing to the Blues versus the Parayko situation.

Regarding Parayko, only he knows if he would be willing to waive his NMC to join the Jets. However, he’s Canadian (from St. Albert, Alberta) and hockey-wise, it would be a perfect fit on the top pair with Josh Morrissey (from Calgary, Alberta) who’s signed for 5 more seasons.

For all those saying Carolina would never be interested in Scheifele, I am not sure about that. Yes, Scheifele is weak defensively, but he’s coming off a 42 goal season and before that he was averaging better than a point per game for a number of seasons.

Carolina’s forwards are relentless puck possession stalwarts and all above average defensively, but as a group they are lacking goal scoring and offensive skill.

This is why a player like Scheifele makes perfect sense.

Offensively gifted to fill a Carolina need? Check.

On the last year of a contract and motivated to have his best season ever in a contract year? Check.

Plus, no matter the forwards he plays with for the Hurricanes, their strengths will compensate for the weakest part of his game AND he’s going to be the best possible version of himself regardless since he’s playing for one last big contract.

Very few (if any) hockey players are “perfect”. Imo, Carolina needs to recognize where they’re at in their competitive window, identify where they need to improve and be bold like Vegas was assuming they want to get over the hump from really good regular season team to Stanley Cup champions.

Not really. They actually have organizational depth, guys like Morrow and Nikishin are going to take spots in the top 4. They’ve also got control over young top 6 pieces like Jarvis and Necas. Svech and KK signed long term. Koochie goalie of the future signed. Ton of middle 6 type forwards and centers ready for a shot.

But sure, tell me more about the org depth.

There are NO Kings insiders saying that the Kings are still in the Dubois sweepstakes, let alone that they're the frontrunners for him. We'll see.

Friedman said in March that PLD is going to MTL at 95% and I dont see much changing unless another pretender throws their hats in the ring. LAK dont have the cap space in 2024 for any extension talk at all when PLD is getting between 8M-9M AAV. Teams simply cant pay that til they clear a lot of space or the cap goes up dramatically which you cant conclude happening anytime soon with no more expansion, tv rights from Bally disappearing and the money pit in Arizona that is losing tens of millions each season and they are playing again in that tiny rink for at least this coming year.
LAK have always seemed like a smokescreen from Dubois agent to play against bidding teams for contract negotiations.

Include Byfield’s bonus money and he’s about a $3.5 million cap hit and Arvidsson is $4.25 million. If those are the primary pieces traded for Dubois, that’s not far from the $8.5 million AAV he likely signs at on an 8 year contract sign-and-trade to the Kings.

Trading Byfield for PLD always seemed unrealistic. It aint happening. The Preds are what you should be looking at as a darkhorse. If they are serious about trading Saros and Winnipeg wants to compete, this is an easy marriage. These big trades always have teams coming out of nowhere or its the most obvious team which is Montreal whom has the cap space and assets to deal. The Habs have the most deep prospect pool in the league and multiple 1st in 2023 and 2025.

Kings trade Durzi for a draft pick. Insiders are saying it was done to clear cap space for their next move. I guess we’ll find out soon if it’s Dubois or something else.

They got to the Eastern Conference Finals this year with half of the top six missing. Svechnikov and Pacioretty didn't play a single game, and Teuvo had his hand broken in game 2 of the Islanders series. They're fine. Every single game in the Panthers series was a one goal game, they do not need more offense. They make the finals if Svechnikov doesn't have a once in a career injury. They're built on defensive structure and stability. We've seen with the Islanders that the parts can change as much as you want, it's the system that breeds success when built on defense. Would the Canes like some more scoring? Yes. Is it something they desperately need? Not really. They're going to continue to contend for as long as Aho, Svechnikov, Slavin and this core are together and Rod is behind the bench. Carolina have become the ultimate plug and play team in the league. Whether that's Hamilton, DeAngelo and Burns at RD, Staal, Trocheck, Kotkaniemi, Stastny at 2C, Martinook, Niederreiter, Noesen at 3LW, Andersen, Mrazek, Nedeljkovic, Raanta, McElhinney, Kochetkov in goal, it doesn't matter. They made the ECF in 2019 with MICHEAL FERLAND playing on the top line and Svechnikov again missing most of that run too because Ovechkin concussed him. Fact of the matter is that the Canes are in a strong position for sustained success and attempted Stanley Cup runs, this core is still incredibly young.
