Description

I personally think the team I have here is better than last years team. While it’s missing a star in Nylander, it’s deeper and plays with a bit more grit. If this happens I wouldn’t be mad. Let me know your thoughts on the moves here.

The hurricanes are looking for an upgrade at the wing, so Nylander to Carolina makes a lot of sense to me. Plus they have a ton of cap space so taking on Murray and Brodie (who doesn’t have negative value but also doesn’t really have a lot of value) so they can get a major upgrade on wing makes sense to me. Brodie is a downgrade from Pesce but Nylander is a massive upgrade from Teuvo.

For the leafs, they clear a lot of cap, so they have a ton of flexibility with who they could add in trade or FA and improve the defence a bit.

Why not aquire Goodrow from NYR along with a second and flip the second to ARI/CHI for 50% retained instead of paying that for Laughton. I love laughton but i’m over paying a first for him. Goodrow and Laughton are guys i love in the bottom 6 so why not get the guy who’s free at 1.8 mil.

I think you’re overvaluing Nylander. He’s an upgrade over Teravainen, but not enough to include Pesce, and certainly not even more to add in two cap dumps.

Sure, if NYR is willing to do that, why not? I just went for Laughton instead because of the rumours about Toronto having interest and Philly having interest in Robertson. But Goodrow would be almost as good and at a much cheaper acquisition price so I’d be down for that.

I think you’re undervaluing Brodie. He’s not a straight up cap dump like Murray is, he’s still a solid top 4 defender. If Carolina doesn’t want him (which would not be the case if they’re trading Pesce), then he can be traded somewhere else for low return.

Murray won't even sniff the ice in Carolina while they're trying to win a Cup. I can't see how they'd take on that cap dump even if it was for Nylander.

Id say a 3rd is probably about what he’d get in a trade yes, maybe slightly more for the right team or if there’s retention or something. But he’s still a very useful defenseman. Wouldn’t be mad to have him stay on the leafs at all. Great defensive defenseman. But like you said he’s getting old and is on the decline.

No probably not, I should have explained in this scenario Carolina buys him out. Which would cost them less than 1 mil this year and slightly over 2 mil next year so not bad, especially with the flexibility they have cap wise.

Fair enough. I'm still pretty skeptical of Carolina being willing to take on dead cap of any kind in a key contention year and year when new contracts for the core will hit but it's not even remotely the craziest proposal I've seen on here.

Giving up more picks would be a lot more palatable to our GM than a lower quality of defensemen

Ur GM already offered a little less and got declined. They already offered a 1st for him. Multiple GMs have. Someone will pay a little extra lol may even be ur GM again

Don’t get me wrong I like Laughton (I mean obviously I like him enough to have a ACGM involving him) but I wouldn’t pay much more then a 1st rounder. But I could see him getting that especially if the trade involves salary retention

I would do that leafs trade if Nylander was willing to extend for 8 x 8.5.

Murray doesn’t really bother me. He would be a good 3G for us in the AHL. Decent insurance for Kochetkov and possibly injured Freddie. I don’t the FO would mind if it meant we weren’t giving up prospects or picks to acquire Nylander

Eeeeh I don’t think I’d take that. The leafs need more then just Teuvo on the roster now. I’d be open to removing Murray and if it’d be what Carolina wants Brodie as well (but I don’t believe they’d think of him as negative value).

Thanks, yes I agree the idea of a trade involving Pesce and Nylander could work if neither want to sign extensions. And I can understand not wanting Murray, but I am curious as to why you would not want Brodie if you are losing a top 4 d man in Pesce. Brodie is getting older and starting to decline but there’s no reason to think he can’t still be a top 4 guy this coming season. But if you don’t want him that’s fine, I’m just honestly curious as to why.

How much more value can they reasonably squeeze for Laughton? Another 3rd? A 2nd? No way a team will do 1st + 2nd + B level prospect for someone they'll staple to the bottom-six. I think Robertson + 1st for Laughton is about as even a trade as it'll get
