I don't expect the Habs to make the playoffs or if by some miracle they do, to go deep. We are gonna draft our goalie of the future at 31 or 37 in this draft scenario, so let's sell high on Monty?
I cannot speak for all the other Habs fans, but I am OK with Montreal trading Montembeault now (perhaps at his peak, perhaps he will further develop, who knows).
I am good with a tandem of Allen and Primeau if the Pittsburgh trade could work.
I just think that if Montreal is trying to build a perennial Cup contender they need high end talent (like Colorado, TB, Dallas etc) acquired in their build up years.
I think Montembeault can be replaced via a goalie drafted in the second round or free agency
Yes, one more year of bottom 10 in the overall standings would be tough for Suzuki and Caufield (because they are competitors) but it should be worth it in 3 to 6 years.
I disagree with an earlier post about Molson having to worry about improving the team to sell tickets. Montreal and Toronto are 2 unique teams that do not really need to worry about selling tickets, whether the team is at the top or bottom of the standings for a few years. I think the fan base is just too entrenched to see a real decline in attendance.
