What is the endgame for Othmann here

Description
The longer I look at it, the more perplexed I get about his future role. He'll almost certainly start the season in Hartford, but then I can't determine how he could get a promotion if the Rangers' left side stays healthy.

I presume one of Kreider or Lafreniere will be off the team for 2024-25, but does that spell a redshirt year for Brennan? Never going to understand why we drafted him over Laffy's Rimouski linemate Bolduc, who literally went the very next pick.

Usually, wingers can play either side, Othmann might be exclusively an LW in juniors but look for that to change as he goes into pro play. The same happened to Lafreniere, who was drafted as an LW but now plays either side (even if it had mixed results).

Yeah but the Lafreniere RW experiment has been nothing short of disastrous for his growth lol, and that was with him getting first line minutes to boost his new role. At least Othmann has *some* history of playing RW in juniors but for a prospect who took a step back in 2022-23, you don't want to convolute a trajectory that already needs a little bit of refocus.

I guess the most probable scenario here is maybe Othmann re-learns the right wing in Hartford?

Such claims can only go so far though. Like when Tony DeAngelo said he was comfortable playing left defence way back when lol. And not to mention, Othmann has been nearly all left wing in his past two years with Flint and Peterborough. I just don't see it happening.

Players are put into all sorts of weird situations in the AHL. Just going to put that out there.

Yep. I said in my reply to you that that was my prediction.
Even though it's going to take longer for him to graduate than it would under normal circumstances. Oh well.

Two ahl years for a mid-first rounder isn't bad though. I feel like it's better to let prospects mature then forcing them into the NHL. Look what my caps did to McMichael, Injuries forced him into the NHL too at the same age that Othman will be next season and it messed his development up.

CHI declines. And it has nothing to do with Harding. There just isn't anything in that trade worth sending anything back to the Rangers. You could take him out and CHI still probably declines. Berard isn't worth anything, and a 2nd doesn't pay for dumping Goodrow.

One is understandable, but two? Not sure if I’d concur, but maybe it’s just unbeknownst to me after my experiences as a Rangers fan haha. Lafreniere and Kakko made the jump right away, whereas everyone else not named K’Andre Miller essentially did their development overseas. Who would be the most comparable prospect development? I lowkey do not remember anything about J.T. Miller’s rookie season and before lol, but that’s probably the most recent example who fits.

Fair enough with Harding vs Future Considerations. I was just trying to find a Ty Emberson equivalent, but that’s by far the least important component of the trade framework lol.

But I can’t agree with your assessment of Berard though. Chicago is looking for forward prospects as far as I know, and that’s our best one not named Adam Sykora. At *worst *I’d evaluate him to a 4th round pick (using Jayden Grubbe as the comparable, we got a 5th from Edmonton for him despite the fact that he wasn't signing and that he wasn’t even one of our top 10 prospects).

I definitely concur on a 2nd alone not being enough, but two of them should not be an issue from a value standpoint. Like I said in the description, I think a Goodrow trade will have the structure of our Patrik Nemeth trade with Arizona from last offseason.

No way. I can name plenty of Rangers forward prospects who are more desirable than Berard. Othmann, Sykora, Korczak, McConnell Barker, Cuylle, Pajuniemi, and Barbashev.

You might be able to dump Goodrow for less, but not on CHI. We have no use for a "playoff performer" with 4 years left on his deal at an almost $4M cap hit and $16.5M in actual salary owed to him.

Ok yeah I wasn’t counting Othmann or Cuylle since they’re about to graduate, but beside them, the only one on that list of yours I can see a good argument for is Korzak. Lockwood hasn’t been able to tread water in the NHL for multiple seasons and Pajuniemi is leaving North America for the SHL. As for BMB and Barbashev, they’re also both just the same prospect as Berard in my eyes, but with less progress as both were 2022 draft picks.

ETA: my ranking would be Othmann, Sykora, Cuylle, Berard, Korczak, and so on. Scott Wheeler even ranked Brett above Will.

Sure. The thing is we don't need more bottom 6 forwards, and that is likely Berards ceiling in the NHL. And that still doesn't pay for dumping Goodrow.

That brings back some good fantasy football memories. Watching someone bid $50+ on this guy in an auction draft was some of the funniest **** I’ve seen in my life

Lol, he got bamboozled. I was thinking about how Dave Nonis signed Jeff Finger to a monster deal, apparently they thought he was someone else. I was thinking Cody Franson, but apparently it might have been Kurt Sauer.

Othmann starts in the AHL. Assuming Knoblach is not promoted to HC of the Rangers, he can work with Othmann to play RW. Rather have him get "on the job" training in the AHL than at the NHL level.

If LAF is not going to get more minutes this season, hope he could at least match his stats from this past season. Then it will be time for one of those "change of scenery" deals with the Rangers targeting a RW in that trade.

Honestly the LW issue could be solved pretty easily. Panarin should suck it up and move to the right. Would that really affect his game that much - his defensive play couldn't be any worse playing at RW.

To answer your question on why the Rangers didn't draft Bolduc - that would have made sense. But if they did draft him the organization would have figured out a way to mess up his development as well.
