Description
Dubas, not shackled by four contracts totaling $40M+, takes this opportunity to build from the net out. Deciding on a goalie is the first priority this summer. Demko had a down season, but I think is a candidate to have a strong bounce back year. Good arguments could be made on both sides regarding Jarry vs. Demko.

Buying out Granlund and dumping Petry allows Dubas to spend on Gavrikov and Severson which helps solidify the blue line. Sets up Demko for success.

The rest of the forwards signed are bargain/value contracts - a couple of players Dubas trusts (Engvall and Kampf) and Monahan at 3C who could be a low risk, high reward with the right contract.

Cap space is available for moves that may be necessary later (i.e. Monahan and Poulin both not working out at 3C).

Note: I don't think Petry is necessarily a bad player, but this dump is made to get younger. I find it difficult to identify a team who would take him and see the value he could provide at his current cap hit. Maybe Minnesota if they move on from Addison and Pittsburgh retains 50%? Not sure. It isn't as simple as just sending him to Detroit, Buffalo or Columbus.

Vancouver won't move Demko. Better off going with a Jarry/Vejmelka Duo

Add in Poulin to the Van trade. Demko is young and inexperienced but has potential. Van could replace him with Jarry (hoping for a healthy season) and go from there.

Canucks decline. The reported ask for Demko at the TDL was a 1st, blue chip prospect, and Raty like prospect. If you aren't offering that, then they have no reason to trade Demko.

I feel like Jarry and Demko are in a similar boat - so giving up assets for him doesn't make much sense imo.

Not a fan of paying to dump Petry either. He had a good season and you're not saving any money

petry still a good player, why would he want to play for a rebuilding team, why would AZ take on 12.5 mil salary (over 2 years) for 35 yo. AZ doesnt need more '25 draft picks. pitt will need those picks

Wouldn't say Petry's season was completely "good." He had his ups and downs. I would definitely still move him if it meant getting younger on the blue line.

He is decent. I think the Penguins will want to go in a different different under Dubas.

Arizona will still need to meet the cap floor at some point, hard to say no to more 2025 draft picks when it's supposed to be when the Penguins could "stink."

Fair enough - good is a subjective term I guess.

If a team outposesses, outshoots, outscores, outexpects, and outchances the opposition with you on the ice and you score at a 40 point pace as a defenseman - I would say that's a good season. I would move him if it meant getting better, not younger. Getting better is what matters. And even still, I'm not paying to dump him. You pay to dump players who are a detriment to the team or that you can't afford. I just see it as a waste of assets to pay to dump him. Either way, we can pretty much guarantee ARI is on his NTC
