Why would you give assets to go from having Brodie to Tanev?

Tanev and Brodie are very similar players, except Tanev is older and more injury prone. Yet somehow one is a cap dump while the other fetches a first + our best defensive prospect? Not even sure how you navigated yourself to this website.

I wouldn't say Tanev is more injury prone after the season Brodie had and Tanev playing a few more games as a result. But yeah even if Tanev is considered slightly better, these guys are so similar, paying anything for a swap just to have Tanev for a year makes no sense. Biggest difference is just that Tanev has a lot more blocks, other than that their raw stats are so close as well.

I do think he's probably paying something for Dube, maybe the 1st or the 3rd or both, and he could just be undervaluing both Dmen.

I don't think the Leafs want to trade Niemola but it wouldn't be in that package. I think they'd love to see him slide into a bottom-4 pairing starting in 24-25. That might be ambitious, but they can shelter him on the third pair with a reliable veteran partner. If they're moving him it'd be for a younger defender who can play in the top-4 for the next 4-5 years likely. That isn't Tanev. Calgary doesn't really seem like they're rebuilding so I'm not sure why they would want to do that trade.
