Description
The only way I see the marner coming to Carolina is if 1. They are able to figure out something long term which I know is hard given he has 2 years on his contract and 2. The trade does NOT involve pesce. Pesce said he loves it in Carolina and wants to stay here. Given these 2 requirements I don’t think we will ever see marker in a canes uniform but I believe this is what the canes “best offer” would look like , but I don’t think it would ever go through.

If that is the best offer, and comes with assurances for a future extension - you aren't even in the ballpark

As said I don’t think Toronto accepts, marker isn’t in the picture for the canes

Canes don’t offer that. We don’t need Marner especially at that price.

Let me guess the same Toronto talking head that said Nylander and Pesce swap was happening

I think a big question mark right now is whoever becomes the Leafs GM. Shanahan doesn't seem to want to trade the core 4 (even though I think that's a huge mistake).

Based off of value alone, I think Toronto accepts. The problem with this trade is that it's likely that none of these players become as good as Marner.
-Necas is a great player but his contract will expire so maybe he leaves.
-Skjei is a good player but not a top-pair defenseman. His contract is also coming up.
-The picks are great but you know that they are going to be late picks.

Overall, I think that it's a hard trade to sell to Toronto fans which is going to be important for any new GM. This would make the leafs worse on paper.
I would try and get Drury or Jarvis because they bring more value than late 1st for a team that wants to win now.

Can you make me an offer with these pieces?
Drury, Necas, Jarvis, 2023 1st, Ryan Suzuki, and Svechnikov

Are Jarvis and Svechnikov off the table?

Jarvis and svech are off the table and I would say pesce is aswell. I think necas, drury, Suzuki and 2023 first are all in play. Necas is RFA so you keep his rights and have negation power

That's what I thought. Svechikov, Jarvis, and Pesce are the first players that I'd ask about

Marner obviously has 2 years left so it's a moot point

Without an extension, Carolina gets fleeced here and extensions aren't figured out 2 years before contract expiration as you indicated

Seeing how Marner has 0 control or ability to add years to his contract, all controllable roster forwards are out. If you want Turbo and futures sure. I can completely understand if Toronto says no. But we aren’t trying to win once over the next year nor are we trying to overload ourselves with high dollar contracts.

The rumor is likely stimming from the fact Carolina calls every team about every player to see.

That was your argument for Necas and Skjei, so simply saying it works both ways

Makes sense. The extra year is worth something but the same concern is there

Why would the Leafs make themselves a worse team? Marner easily become the Canes best player but they won’t move a core playersmirk ; Makes zero sense for Leafs to trade him (and to an Eastern conference contender) especially when the return is so underwhelming 🤦🏻

Ahhh pardon…he’s got 2years left on his deal; he’s a hometown boy and Leafs are the richest team in the league with TONS of cap space in 25. Care to explain?

After two years he will walk. Say 13 mil for Matthew’s, 9 for nylander. You going to continue to pay the core 4 so much cap and have no money for depth which is a problem because players aren’t going to continue to go there for cheap deals if the team isn’t winning a cup and they won’t with the core 4 in place. Marner isn’t going to take a pay cut either he gets 12ish. They put themselves in cap hell and will continue to be in it unless they make a change. I bet Matthew’s walks aswell

Wow, you must have been sitting on that for a while - hope you feel better. But it was mostly nonsense:
1/ JT contract expires same year as Marner so lots of dough
2/ cap going up significantly by ‘25, as much as $5-6 M from this year per some estimates
3/ leafs will always be a preferred location, if for no reason then it’s the centre of the hockey universe & the surrounding area contributes more nhl players than any other region in the world (hometown pull)
4/ Matthew’s said he wants to stay - but time will tell 🤷🏻

I don’t think home town pull is as big as it once was. Players want to play in USA where there’s less tax. Florida, Nevada, and Texas have no income tax. Notice how teams in those states are still going for the cup. They have the pull as players get more of their money

You also said the canes wouldn’t move a core player. Necas and skjei are both core players. Necas is an RFA so Toronto has negotiable power. And skjei is top 4 on Toronto

Holy recency bias; other than Tampa none of the recent cup winners have come from ‘low tax’ states. And how do you know what players want tears of joy ? I repeat - Leafs will never have a problem attracting players. Marner is going nowhere (unless he’s traded which is unlikely), so you can relax

Then nhl is changing that’s all I’m saying. Tampa with back to back cups and no income tax. Canada hasn’t won a cup in like 30 years. I know there are less teams in Canada but still players want to keep their money not half going to the government

The taxes argument is over played, but keep on flogging it if you want. Your argument might hold if you were talking about Winnipeg or Ottawa or Edmonton, but again - the Leafs will NEVER have a problem attracting top players or keeping top players, especially hometown boys like Marner.
