The truth is is that if it was 2 for 2, Matthews/Marner for MacKinnon/Rantanen and all players had similar term left on deals, it wouldn't be such a far-fetched idea. The inclusion of Makar definitely makes this especially silly though

Even 2 for 2 moving superstars for superstars is always a dicey area both teams alienate their fan bases while not really improving or gaining assets.

Toronto is losing out on the best player IMO. Also, while Rielly isn't better than Cale, he's a leader and produces in the most needed moments. Niemela is also our top D prospect and that 2024 first is still a 1st

Heh. The Leafs take this and run, dude. Calling Neimela your top defensive prospect is like saying the McDouble is the best burger at McDonald's. I mean yeeeeah okaaaay, but that's not saying much. Not much at all. Is he even still a top 100 prospect? Maybe he's barely hanging on, but the draft will instantly shove him far from the top 100. A late 24 1st is just a regular late 1st, it does not cover the wide gulf in these packages. Rielly is a leader and a big moments producer on a team that has won one playoff round. Makar won the Conn Smythe at 23. Matthews/McKinnon and Marner/Rantanen are, at best, washes for you, but Makar is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more valuable than Rielly. Meanwhile, Makar is locked up for four seasons and McKinnon is locked up for eight while Matthews and Marner go UFA in one and two seasons, respectively. Robertson is worth practically nothing. That's alllllll before we even get to what the fan reaction would be if the Avs did this. Most of those folks are not at all stable, dude.

Don;t get me wrong, I would LOVE for Colorado to do this, because it would be spectacularly dumb. Like wet sack of hammers dumb. Sakic is not that dumb.
