Description
Rossi trade: Minnesota gets a "do-over" on a center. Pittsburgh gets the middle of the lineup center they need to fill out their lineup for the rest of the Crosby and Malkin era. Rossi also leads them up the middle once those two players retire. Whoever Pittsburgh drafts at 14th overall this year likely won't be in the NHL for another one or two years, and Rossi steps into their lineup immediately. Minnesota gets another 1st round pick, and that player lines up better with the start of their supposed contending window, which is two or three seasons away. Rossi showed responsible defensive posture at the start of the season but didn't produce any offense. He showed he had scoring ability in the AHL, but did not impress at the very end of the season when he was elevated to the NHL again. This is a big summer for his development into the top-six center I think he will be.

Addison trade: A high to mid-second round pick (such as the last of Detroit's three consecutive second round picks, which would be 43rd overall, I think) is probably close to what Addison's trade value should be. If Minnesota can't get a second round pick, I think they simply sign him because his qualifying offer is inexpensive. He is a high floor, right-shot defenseman who has shown to be effective on the power play, but hasn't been able to put it all together at 5-on-5 yet. I'm unsure if Detroit has a need for right-shot defenseman, but I'm more shooting for the range of the pick here.

Goligoski trade: This is a salary dump trade. I picked San Jose because they have cap space and it's a city people like to play in. Goligoski has a full no-move clause so he has to okay the destination if he allows himself to be traded. If he doesn't waive his no-move, then substitute Jon Merrill in this trade.

I think Daemon Hunt will play NHL games this year. I don't believe he'll make the team out of training camp, although he might. If he doesn't, I would imagine he'll be the first call-up for injuries and such. I would also think that once he's up with the big club, he'll probably stay there if his play is adequate.

Largely, this is the same roster as last year. There aren't many moves Minnesota can make without dealing a core member of the roster (Zuccarello, Foligno, etc.), which I think is unlikely. This season will be dependent on internal growth from Boldy, Dewar, Duhaime, Beckman, and Faber, and maybe even Hunt. Filip Gustavsson will also need to take a larger percentage of the starts.

My dream draft picks:
14th overall selection (from PIT): Nate Danielson, C
20th overall selection: David Edstrom, C

My thoughts and always humble opinion.

We definitely need RD but you Minny fans seem to really want Addison gone. Why is that exactly?

Also pens pass, id rather test my luck with Sam Poulin or a FA signing than Rossi who has struggled at the NHL level, espicially for that price, Mayby if it was a later 1st id be more open to it but a top 15 pick in this draft is worth more to be tbh

Personally, I would like to keep him. He has such a high floor with his power play vision that if he could get it to click 5-on-5, he could be really good. Unfortunately, from what I hear and read, the hockey ops in Minnesota aren't as high on him and they think he has more value as a trade piece.

Fair. 14 is pretty high. I was thinking the fit could line up really well if Rossi develops how I think he will.

The fit isn't the issue to me, it's just the price of it and the fact we got Sam Poulin who kinda in the same boat. Also the need for instant production is something the pens need rn and can't really afford to move pick 14 for someone who could become something. If we move the pick, It needs to be for an established top 6 foward, Pens are in win now mode while the core 3 are still producing

I don't love Addison's game, I'd take a chance on him for a 3rd, but a 2nd feels like too much.

No chance Rossi lands a 1st right now.

Pittsburgh would be better off trading the 1st for a proven veteran center. Rossi is a toss up prospect at the NHL level and while someone might still value him at a 1st, the Pens need a sure thing to add to the roster.

Pens 100% need veteran help for that pick and thinking the value is too high is a fair argument. All that makes lots of sense.

But to say Poulin is in the same boat is pretty out there. Rossi is a year younger and has 2 PPG seasons in the AHL, Poulin hasn’t done anything near that.

I get that we’re trying to temper our expectations about what Addison will bring back but there is a very recent and consistent track record of RD with a cup of tea in the NHL getting dealt for mid to late 1st round picks. I also think Addison is arguably the best of the bunch.

Romanov - 13 OA (draft day 2022)
Lundqvist - 2023 1st (mid-late 20s) from DAL in summer 2022
Sandin - 2023 1st (late 20s) from BOS at 2023 TDL

Still a yes from me on Addy. Watching him live I think he could really round into a solid middle pair D with PP capabilities.

what i mean by Poulin is in the same boat is hes also a former 1st round pick looking to make his mark where hes an unproven NHL talent that could make it as the pens 3C. Not so much comparing the 2 where i do believe rossi is better although both play 2 very different type of games, wasn't really comparing the too skill wise, Just the situation they are in

Yes but the difference is Addison has been a healthy scratch for 3 months and everyone knows Minny wants to move him. For those reasons I have a hard time believing he'll return a 1st unless there's enough teams that think MN is dead wrong on him and there's a bidding war with those teams trying to reup each other. I like Addison btw but I think just for those reasons his value might be impacted.

Gotcha. Yeah, I’m still bullish on Rossi as a player given his history. I personally think a mid teens pick for him is fair but it’s all about the team sending that pick. MTL? Sure. PIT, god no.

As for Poulin, I’m kinda surprised he’s still in the PIT org. Seems like moving him would have been the right thing to do.

What about shipping Rossi and Addison to Detroit for NYI '23 1st (17th OA) and a '24 2nd? Or if the ask really is for a '23 pick then it would need to be DET 3rd. I do feel Rossi's value is more in the 20-25 range and Addison in the 45-65 range so maybe a 17th overall and a 73rd overall could get it done.

Don’t forget that Lundqvist was never seeing the ice for NYR and everybody knew it. Sandin was in and out of the lineup for TOR and the league saw he was gonna be a cap casualty. Addison is arguably the best of this group and has a record to support that. IDK. I think it’s a pretty straight forward comparison.

Romanov is an entirely different kind of player but I think his trade does add another reasonable data point to think about.

I’ll agree with you that a 1st might be more than what he returns but I think 2 2nds or a late 1st is a value that’s fair to pencil in and there’s plenty of comps to support that.

That trade would be viewed as the Wild equivalent of the Bruins taking Zobril/Senycyhn/DeBrusk in 15.

Overall I would disagree, before this year, Addison didn't really play at all and was scratched many times during the season for poor play and didn't play in the playoffs even when he should as Klink and Merril were turnover machines and the PP looked absolutely horrid.

Lundqvist had the higher draft pedigree and was wanted by multiple teams which drove the price up to a 1st and for most of the year played like he was a steal then fizzled out.

Sandin also much better Addison, but cap crunch and TOR had many other options.

Romanov is a better all around defender than all these players, but the price I do feel was too high to pay for him.

What I mean is that it’s a potentially catastrophic piece of asset management. Rossi for 17 would probably be a wash at best in terms of how good a player you get but you’d have to wait 4-5 years to see it rather than 1-2.

As for the Addison deal, I have a few posts above talking about what players like him go for in terms of trade value. Suggesting a mid-late 2nd a year away is unbearably poor asset management IMO.

I don’t mind decisive action but you need to leverage the assets you have rather than giving them away, which I think this return would be akin to.

You make a good point. If Bill Guerin can get a 2nd round pick for Jordan Greenway, it would make sense he would try to get more than that for Addison, who has a much higher upside IMO. Of what I can remember, he has yet to sell low on a prospect (or any player for that matter) during his tenure. Obviously Greenway and Addison are different positions, ages/arcs in development curve.

I’ll reiterate that my valuation of Addison is based on actual trades of 21/22 yo RD with little to no NHL experience. Greenway was BG selling high and doesn’t factor into that at all.

But trading Addison makes this team worse and I’d be hard pressed to say we’ll be better off trading him for a 1st, let alone scraps. Play the kid, he’s good.

Was that really selling high though? He had 7 points in 45 games with us and was nowhere near the player he was in 2021-22 with Eriksson Ek and Foligno. He really wasn't the same since he hurt his shoulder in Ottawa. I think this was much more a case of taking advantage of a coach's love for a former player. Realistically, Don Granato (his USNTDP coach) in Buffalo and David Quinn (his BU coach) in San Jose would see the most value in adding Greenway despite all the flaws we were seeing. I'd be shocked if another team outside of those 2 would have paid that much for the Greenway we saw last season.
