Boeser will absolutely get you a 1st rounder +. his dad died in 2022 who was his biggest fan and mentor. He also was playing on a disgraceful Canucks team. I’m not a Canucks fan but as someone who has dealt with a similar situation with his dad dying it takes a very big toll on you especially if it’s someone who has taught you that much.

Why would the Canes do this when their window is now? Necas is just breaking out now. The Canes downgrade their winger depth just to get a pick for someone to potentially show up on the roster in 3-4 years, is just bad asset management for a contender.

Ya exactly. And even in a down year boeser put up 55pts in 74 games. Which would have been good for 3rd in scoring on the predators. Plus it's not like this pick is in the teens. It's 25th at best and probably more like 29-32.

I honestly don't think Canucks will move Boeser. Tocchet seemed to trust him and I think they believe he can bounce back if he can get into a better headspace. But if they need the cap space they might not have another option to move.

It's kind of on par with Carolina's MO actually. They're constantly trying to balance win now with longterm sustainability. If they're not 100percent sold on necas (which I don't think they are) then they move him before they have to pay him big money. They get a cost controlled winger that is a bit of an analytics darling plus a high pick in a deep draft that can contribute to the team on the cheap in a couple of years.

Dundon is on record saying he believes the way to win is to simply give yourself as many years as possible as a legit playoff team (paraphrasing here). This move fits with that.

It also fits with the Canucks MO of trying to take shortcuts to fill out their roster rather than drafting and developing.

I'm not saying it's a likely deal but if this happened on draft day I wouldn't be shocked at all that a team like Carolina is being proactive in cap management, and targeting an underused analytically strong player that has cost certainty.

No, he really doesn’t lol. Not unless he shows he can bounce back.

I doubt Carolina would move a core piece in the middle of their window when they have plenty of cap.

As for Boeser, put me in the believer bucket. A late 1st with retention is reasonable. I had made that offer a few times in ACGMs prior to Meier trade.

The guy is good. Like I said, though, it’s a combination of both of the things I said. I think this man can easily be a 30 goal scorer if he’s put into the right situation like minnesota but IK they dont have the cap

I wouldn’t move him too. If it was that easy to get a deal done without a first, all of the teams would’ve jumped on that. It’s a very sad situation with his dad and I felt his pain when he spoke about it. I can’t imagine what he’s going through still like what I was when my dad died.

I agree it's doubtful Carolina does this but as I mentioned in another comment it would be kind of on brand for Carolina IF they're not sold that necas will be worth his asking price on the next contract. They're a team that is always proactive with their roster management and their owner is a believer in giving yourself as many opportunities at the cup as possible rather than the all in approach that most teams take at a certain point.

He would have been 3rd on Nashville in points and 5th in points per game behind Duchene, Forsberg, Novak, and Josi. And that is in a year where everyone knows he struggled. If you can get that for 2yrs at 5.5mil for a late 1st rounder you take it.

Honestly it's probably not a smart trade by Vancouver in terms of asset management but when you are cap strapped and trying to compete you have to do move salary somehow.

Could probably obtain DeBrincat with that pick

Probably but unfortunately the Canucks don't have the cap space to sign debrincat. Unless maybe it's something like Boeser + 11.

Ah, the good old “He’d be X in points on your team!” cope.

Boeser is not returning Vancouver a first unless there’s significant retention OR Boeser is able to bounce back from an underwhelming season. And it wont be Nashville overpaying for him lol

How is this move being proactive in cap management? Necas is very likely to make anywhere between 5-7mil on his next deal, maybe less if it’s a bridge deal, and will very likely be closer to 5mil (long term) if he is signed this off season. So, that would be a yearly savings of -2mil in cap for the 23-24 season, and 50k-2mil the next 2 seasons. The cap savings are negligible at best. Besides, 11OA is still a magic bean. There is no guarantee that whoever is selected with that pick ever makes it to the NHL.

Garland has likely peaked as a 50-ish point middle 6 winger. Necas still has more offense and defense that hasn’t been tapped yet, and who knows if that 11OA makes a big enough difference to really make it worth it for the Canes. Not enough reward to cover the risk.

You're kidding yourself if you think necas ends up between 5-7 mil on his next deal. It will be on par with Thomas, Kyrou, Hintz etc. as long as he puts up another similar season or better. He will be looking for ≈ 8mil long term.

Depending on when the deal is signed, it will likely be between 5-7mil. If it’s this season, it’s likely to be closer to 5, whereas next season, provided he repeats his performance, it’s closer to 7-8. Either which way, for the extra production that Necas can provide, the cap difference is negligible.
