Description
Idea with Mojo is get a solid vet LW and overpay a little bit to get him on a one year deal. Budget would be up to 5M. Doesn't have to be him specifically though it may be a fit, just someone who could fill that role. Could possibly even be Domi if he still can't land a long term deal at decent money. Only 1 year so that the money is back on the table when resigning Matthews, Nylander, Liljegren, etc.

Gio is fine but old, Gio and Timmins pair and Kulikov-Schenn pair would rotate to keep everyone fresh with Timmins probably playing a bit more as he's young and doesn't need the same rest/family time that Gio/Schenn might like. By the time you account for injuries and stuff they're still probably all playing around 45-60 games each. Come playoffs though likely:

Rielly - Schenn
McCabe - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren

Where Rielly plays most minutes, McCabe and Brodie pair 2nd most, and the other 3 play roughly the same

Here's a look at the goaltending situations of the bottom 1-12...note that this doesn't include cap, which many of these guys wouldn't be able to absorb:
Anaheim: Gibby/Dostal
Columbus: Elvis/Tarasov
Chicago: Mrazek/Soderblom/Stauber
San Jose: Kahkonen/Maybe
Montreal: Allen/Montembault/Primeau (waivers eligible)
Zona: Vej/Ingram/Prosvetov (Meh, but waivers)
Philly: Hart/Sandstrom
Washington: Kuemper/Chuck Lindgren
Detroit: Husso/Maybe
St. Louis: Bin/Maybe
Vancouver: Demko/Martin (?) Maybe
Ottawa: LOLZ

When it comes to Arizona, this is the exact opposite of the type of contract that they typically take on. Having them take on $6 mil in actual cash seems like a pretty crazy move...Same with a lot of these teams.

I think need a goalie and take on Murray aren't mutually exclusive. Teams like ANA, CHI, SJ, ARI for example could easily just hold him on the roster or even buy him out in exchange for the pick. Could also see a number of those goalies getting traded and using Murray as the stopgap.

Is it really 6M owed left in cash I didn't even think to check to be honest, the Leafs usually structure them very front heavy so I just assumed it was but I guess the Leafs didn't sign this deal. Yea that might steepen the price a bit.

If we really can't move him I guess we'd skip the LW signing, Jarnkrok or Robertson top 6 and re-sign Acciari. Not the end of the world at all but yea.

Yeah, it was $8 mil, but Ottawa is eating 25%. Honestly, 100% skip Johansson and live with it, IMO. Woll is waiver exempt still, and odds are Murray will be on LTIR pretty quickly again, which will give you the space to add leading up to the deadline.

Woll isn't waiver exempt next year I don't think but I'd honestly just scratch or send down Murray and play Woll, he's ready, healthy, and at this point it would hurt his development to be anywhere else but the NHL.

But yea if someone would take a deal like this, done - if not, we roll with that, certainly can manage if we have to keep him. Even at the TDL most of Murray's money would be paid out, if we go trade for a rental throwing Murray in that package to offset the cap probably isn't as difficult, if he's not already on LTIR.

Murray has a 10 team no trade list so being traded to a non contender is most definitely not in Murray's interest maybe just keep him and let his contract expire or buy out. Definitely going to be a challenge to find a trade partner that wants him that can afford him and isn't on the no trade list

true but I bet if the Leafs came to him and said you're either 3rd string behind Woll or we trade you to a non-contender, he's picking non-contender to go play and earn his next deal. Which is likely what's happening, Woll has been incredible.

Detroit owns the Vancouver and St. Louis seconds so you’re down to just the 2 teams with a “maybe” beside them in the bottom 12. As a wings fan though I did propose this exact trade about a week ago so would be happy to see it. Think the leafs would be able to handle a buyout or ltir instead though

we can't do a buyout, 2M cap penalty the year Matthews and Nylander extensions would kick in. We can just scratch him, bury him in the minors and soak the cap for one year, or if possible LTIR.

Very true. Only thing I'd be worried about with a buyout for the Leafs is that having $2 mil extra on the books in 24/25 might not be ideal when they're trying to negotiate with Matthews/Nylander. Another team could certainly do it, but it still costs $4 mil over the two years.

I don't know...I definitely didn't see Mrazek being as easy to dump as he was last year, so who knows.

It's not actually 6 million though eh? Ottawa is paying a 3rd of his salary. It's actually 5.36 million. But let's just round up to 6 because that makes it much worse right?

I was wrong, it is 25% so 6 million in cash but a lower cap hit. Still, despite his Leaf status making his value plummet 200% beyond what it should be, he's a better than many option netminder. The market is trash this summer. Murray isn't that bad of an option. Is Andersen or Jarry and better really? Andersen is hurt all the time and fails in the post season. Jarry is injury prone and often inconsistent. Who knows Murray may get in a few games in the playoffs and do well cementing his reputation as a playoff performer. Still hockey to be played if he ever gets healthy.

man Murray at 4.68M against the cap and 6M in cash is absolutely not better than most options. He's hurt all the time and hasn't posted a month at .900sv% or more in 2023. No team with playoff aspirations will take him, maybe some bottom feeders will take a sweetener for taking him.

But hey, Dubas took two swings with high risk high reward in Murray and Samsonov, and we really only needed one of them to hit - and Sammy certainly has.

Matt Murray over last 2 seasons: 46 GP, .906 sv% last year, .903 sv% this year

Freddie Andersen over last 2 seasons: 86 GP, .922 sv% last year, .903 sv% this year

Tristan Jarry over last 2 seasons: 105 GP, .919 sv% last year, .909 sv% this year.

Murray is the worst option of those three and it's not particularly close.

2 cups means something to some. He's better than Mrazek and that is the market price.

2 cups doesn't justify the price per game played when you haven't won a playoff round in 5 years and a cup in 6, and play 20 games a year and put up slightly above average numbers in half of those games and well below average numbers in the other half.

And yes, maybe we get off paying the Mrazek price, but it also depends on the goaltending situation of teams willing to accept cap dumps and the number of teams that would entertain it.

I think the Mrazek dump is what the price would roughly be as well, but to suggest he's a valid option for a contending team at 4.7M (a price tag at which he'd have to be the starter most likely), never mind insinuating that he's a better option than Jarry (who still played 47 games despite injury this season compared to Murray's 20) is ridiculous.

His 47 games played though is a bad number to look at, while yes he did get injured 3 times this season. He also split time with Samsonov for most of the season. He only really had 1 stretch where he got a few starts in a row and he played his best hockey in that stretch.

Also his last injury was so unlucky. I hope he gets a chance to play next year and rebuild his value because he is a good goalie when he's healthy.
