The PIT trade isn't all that appealing, imo.
To get the obvious out of the way, I love Marc-Andre Fleury and would be ecstatic if he returned. But I don't know if that's the best thing for this team. Betting on age and experience hasn't gone well for us lately. And MAF will be 39 for most of next season. How much longer will he be an NHL caliber goalie?
DeSmith is usually a solid backup, and is signed for a little over half as much as MAF. That money can be better used imo on upgrading our forward depth, which is an absolute must in the offseason.
Speaking of forward depth, Ryan Poehling. He's been our 3C down the stretch. Good 2 way player, very fast, and still young. Exactly the kind of player I want more of in this team's bottom 6, not less.
Goligoski is another former Penguin who was really good here, but that was also a long time ago and he's practically been MIN's 6/7th D all year. The aforementioned age thing rears it's head again.
You're offering the two oldest players on your team, an AHL guy, and a former 6th round pick, and we're the ones sending a pick the other way. Not very enticing. I know MAF is probably going to be an upgrade to DeSmith, but is that really enough to make up the difference? I'm betting the under on getting Vegas MAF.
