What If Matthews Was Traded

Description
In the (unlikely) event the Maple Leafs feel they can’t re-sign Matthews, some analysts have raised the question of whether or not they’d trade him before his No-move-clause kicks in. If this were to happen, Vegas could be seen as a good destination. The team is known for making big trades, and would be closer to where Matthews grew up. He’d get a chance to play with Eichel, and the two could form one of the strongest 1-2 center groups in the league. In return, the Maple Leafs would likely want a top pick, a top prospect, a major roster player, and a couple of young players and depth pieces. This trade could offer the Leafs a chance at more depth and physical/defensive ability, which could prove beneficial even if it comes at the cost of their franchise center. It was incredibly hard to find a trade comparable, of course.

I mean if he stayed how could that team survive at his cap hit back then ?
He left because NYI wasnt taking him seriously and basically said "if you think you can get more elsewhere feel free"
NYI put themselves in that position

Oh don’t worry they’ll just ship off another one of their old core players for future considerations like they did Pacioretty and Fluery. It’s an annual tradition. Goodbye Reilly Smith

You're right, players don't put themselves or their team "under the bus" by saying they want to be traded or going to leave as UFAs. I'm always amazed that fans believe what players, coach, or GMs say publicly.
Matthews really can't be traded till TDL when he cap isn't so restrictive to the contending team that trades for him. Leafs have the decision next TDL, are we in wih all our expiring contracts, Matthews, Nylander and Brodie or are we sellers....for futures and having lots of cap space in the summer.

I however don't believe he was honest with management either or they would have dealt him to acquired some assets. At least according to Snow

The fact that Matthews signed just a 5 contract, shows to me way back when, he was thinking about becoming a UFA and maybe playing elsewhere. Now I believe he had great distain with coach Mike Babcock, who was a horrible person and poor bench coach. I've said for years, I believe Matthews wants to play in a big US market. LA Kings are my first choice with an expiring Koptitar contract.
Leafs are in a win mode, I don't think they were selling Matthews regardless, but I next TDL....that might be wise.

As it would have been for the Islanders if Tavares had said listen I just really want to go play in Toronto. That was his right but be a man and tell them up front. Loved the where's you jammies chants.

There's no logic in what you wrote. It was Isles management that had the choice if they traded Tavares. The Isles were two points out of the playoffs, so they didn't trade him. The fact that he hadn't resigned by TDL, the Isles management must've know their was good chance he was leaving. And I can't blame any player.....Eight years for one team with little team success just might be enough. Makes no difference what Tavares said (we will never know). Isles still could have traded Tavares and resigned him in the summer possibility

Really your ability to reason is that weak you can't figure out he (according to Garth Snow) Fu**ING lied to islander management and said he wanted to resign but actually took a lower offer to play in Toronto. If he had been a man and said to Snow I just really want to go home, then he trades him and the Islanders get some assets. How is that not easily understandable

Of course, Snow could be putting his own spin on why Tavares wasn't resigned to protect his ass. Really your ability to reason is that weak you can't figure out when Tavares said "wanted to sign", doesn't have much meaning. Isles and Tavares had one and half years to make solidify a deal. Gee, GMs lie all the time, how many time does a GM tell a coach/and the media "You're not getting fired" and the coach is fired days later. Or player "Isn't going to get traded", and they are traded.

With the situation the Islanders were in at the time Snow telling the truth makes more sense. They weren't a playoff team and unless you believe you have a deal imminent why wouldn't you dump him? So, buy what happened Snow believing he had an imminent deal is logical. The only reason you'd believe you have an imminent deal is conversation with the player or you're a complete moron (other than Mike Millbury) I can't really remember one of those.

I really don't know why people think Tavares is unique in this situation. Don't you hear all the time a player says "I want to stay with this team". Then he bolts as a UFA to another team.

No, I don't believe a deal was imminent or else the deal would have been signed. Tavares saying "he wants to sign" (as an Islander) and what Boltsbeathabs quoted ,,,so what, players say that all the time....maybe even to his GM. Why wouldn't he, they don't want to lose leverage in getting an eight year deal.

You misunderstood me I said he made Snow believe it was imminent. That I'm sorry is the most logical scenario. Unless you believe Garth Snow is an utter and complete moron.
