I don’t see this trade happening for some reasons:
. Seguin will never waive for Montreal. Why would he do that?
. Seguin is not a player that fits into the Habs plans
. I would stay far far far away from Gallagher. He is completely broken and, if he can play, his value is way below his contract
It is the biggest hockey market in the world and the most successful team all time, I wouldn't be too surprised if he at some point would want to play there, since he's a Canadian.
Eventually Canadiens will be competing, and Seguin would be a fine Top-6 center for them. His strengths does suit well the offensive game Habs play.
Gallagher is a bit of a long shot, but his analytics are still pretty solid, and also this trade gives us much cap security in the long-run, because Gallagher might be LTIR bound by the end of his contract. And if it came to that he stays healthy but sucks pretty bad in let's say two years from now, his buyout is much, much cheaper than Seguin's is.
We need a lot of money in 3 years from now. Robo, Otter, Johnston, Stankoven and few other prospects do need to be re-signed by this point, and Seguin's contract runs for longer than that, which automatically takes $10M in cap space from us.
Best case scenario, Gallagher ages like wine and doesn't have too many health issues, we could actually trade him for futures in 2025 or so. Or keep him.
At any rate, I think for the long-term we need to somehow rid ourselves of Seguin (even though I like him), and given he's had a decent year it should be a lot easier now than in two years. I see some benefits in selling him for Gallagher for instance, because no one can take him in without sending some cap our way, and getting Gallagher has certain perks to it.
