No matter what you think of him, John Gibson fills the position of starting goaltender for us until our next window of contention, and that's worth more to us than a future first-round draft pick, in large part because that future first-round draft pick isn't going to be enough to buy us a replacement starting goalie with at least four years of term. That may not make sense to you from your PoV, but it makes sense to us from ours.

I don't agree with better, but certainly cheaper. There's going to be a massive supply of current NHL starters and backups avaliable as FAs this season, several of which will have been displaced by rookies. There will be so many avaliable it should drive AAVs down for goalie signings.
