Good pickup for Winnipeg. I thought Niederreiter was a good signing for Nashville this past off-season, and one that they would be unlikely to regret because with only 2 years term they wouldn’t be stuck having to overpay him during his declining years, unlike a lot of free agents his age. I just realized that it’s next year’s 2nd-round pick, not this year’s, so there’s a risk that it will be earlier in the round, but it’s still a small price to pay for a guy who can play in the top 6 the rest of this season and next at a reasonable cap hit. The only negative I can see is that he doesn’t seem to be one of those guys who distinguishes himself in the playoffs.
I haven’t seen him play much in Nashville, but it looks like he’s on his way to another 20+ goal season, so based on that I’d guess that he’s been meeting expectations but not exceeding them. As a UFA signing they still come out ahead trading him for a 2nd, but I’m curious why they’re trading him at all. Are they freeing up cap space for another move (these $4M middle-6 guys with moveable contracts are usually the ones to go when a team wants to do that) or are they starting a general sell-off because they’ve realized they’ll never be as good as they were last year when everybody had a career year? I guess we’ll see.
