Description
If there is even a sliver of a chance Weegar is available, I would be all over that if I were Dubas. Prime aged #2 dman with term.

I'd think a fair trade of our top prospect, top young dman and a 1st is reasonable.

This would easily give the Leafs their best roster in a long time.

I like Weegar. But TOR can't afford his contract long term-- at least without waiving goodbye to Nylander or another core player.

I like it, but we might want Justin Holl as a replacement player as well and would throw in a 3rd/4th or something back for him

I'd have thought that CGY fans would say that it's too little but cool.

I'm only quoting you as an example of a Flames fans not being upset over the trade.

Don't think he's worth it. Prime age? The guy is almost 30. There are very few defensemen still good even around 33 because their body starts really breaking down. His prime years have been the last 3 then Florida sold high. Don't see the Leafs or many teams being interested right now. 8 years after this is a lot of commitment.

I mean if the Flames were selling I think I'd be okay with this but ultimately it's really unlikely they move on that quickly from a guy they just got back in a big deal. I'd be less surprised if it was Hanifin that ended up moving.

No I think that's a decent offer, like I said, we (or more likely I) would want Holl back for our 3rd Pairing and I'd also want to bring in RD Prospect William Villeneuve if possible, since he's already familiar with 2 of our LD Prospects, them being former QMJHL Teammates

We could then use TOR's 2024 1st in a Package to acquire Jakob Chychrun and then would move Kylinton and/or Hanifin (or Tanev) out in the off-season to acquire a Top-6 Forward, Colton Parayko or Anthony DeAngelo

I'd do the same deal for Tanev, but without the 1st, since he's older and only has 1 year left on his term, but when healthy, he's an amazing defender and performs way above his cap hit. Most Flames Fans would say its sacrilegious to move Tanev, since he's a Big Part & Leader for our Team, but I think we move him if we get decent value in return and Sandin is still very young and would be a low cost Kylington or Hanifin replacement

You'll get way more years and offense out of Weegar though and $6.25mil won't seem like that much in a year or two from now when the Cap goes up. I think Weegar does better on a high flying offence first team like FLA or TOR, as opposed to Sutter's Defense first dump & chase style

Forwards develop and peak faster than Goalies and Defensemen do - Forwards typically peak between 24-30 and Defensemen typically peak between 26-32

Far more Goalies and Defensemen continue playing NHL Hockey past 33 than Forwards typically do

Personally, my pitch perfect plan for TO would be:
Trade Marner and acquire Chychrun + 1 more defensemen (like a Hanifin) and could still have some leftover assets. this solves the defence issue that I have. Then, I would address the RW issue by picking up Kapenen at half retained and Barbashev.

My Lines would end up being:
Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Barbashev
Kapenen - O'Rielly - Acciari
Holmberg - Kampf - Engvall

Rielly - Hanifin
Chychrun - Brodie
Gio - Lilly

Sammy - Murray

Sorry for going off-topic but back to the trade, if Weager's contract was 2 years shorter, I would be all over this deal. But the back half of his extension is pretty rough
