Trade confirmed: Arizona Coyotes - Vegas Golden Knights

didnt add anything, weber keeping that money, and retiring after he gets healthy, only relevant thing is the pick, nobody wins, nobody loses, just an irrelevant trade just like datsyuk

I feel like the league and the players association need to do something about LTIR. It just seems like a huge loophole. That teams can use players who’ll never play again to reach the cap floor defeats the purpose of having a cap floor.

Using LTIR to exceed the cap in the playoffs seems like something that shouldn’t be allowed either. If a guy gets healthy for the playoffs then I suppose he should be eligible to play, but under no circumstances should a team be allowed to dress a lineup whose combined AAV exceeds the salary cap.

This trade is getting way more discussion than it deserves.

There's an alternate time line somewhere that makes the Arizona Coyotes a cup contender by adding Shea Weber to their roster. With a team like Datsyuk, Pronger and Weber how could you not win.

If Weber is LTIR, Why move the money when you can fill the 7.8 million of extra dollars?

LTIR is not the same as free cap space. There are resources on this website that explain it more in depth than I am going to. Teams do not want to have LTIR contracts because it is a strategic disadvantage. No LTIR contracts is best even know that LTIR contracts are better than dead cap or bad contracts that are active.

The short of it is that this is a great move for Vegas. It's also a great move for Arizona but if they somehow become a cap team in the next 3.5 years, it could bite them in the ass. That doesn't look likely though.

I think the reason Vegas did this is because of the 10% cushion in the offseason. You can't put players on LTIR in the offseason so they're only allowed to be 10% above the whatever the salary cap is. This affects their ability to carry over contracts into next season.

There is some sort of mechanism for off season LTIR.

https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq

The reason Vegas did it is because with Weber's term, there is no guarantee they will have other LTIR contracts during the entire duration of his contract. They paid a 5th round pick for significantly easier long term cap management. They acquired Weber because Lehner was expected to be out for the season, and Montreal took Dadonov. It was a kick the can down the road move, where Weber added to their LTIR pool had no change to how they had to manage their cap this season since they already had Lehner on LTIR. It worked out well for them because the Coyotes took Weber for a 5th. Mayo's cap hit is below the threshold for buried contracts, and Vegas is unlikely to be concerned with the real money salary implications of this kind of deal.

The series of trades basically works out to Vegas retroactively dumping the Dadonov contract for a 5th. That's very good work by Vegas. (Obviously, the Holden for Dadonov swap was bad, but they can't undo that)

Couldn't they just put him back on LTIR in that case? If so then I don't see how this could bite them. I know it would be better to have cap space, but having somebody on LTIR doesn't prevent you from spending all your cap money on active players, especially if you know the guy on LTIR isn't coming back.

So.
Vegas basically magic'ed almost $8M in cap space for a 5th round pick by removing Weber's cap hit from their LTIR pool without taking back any cap (as Mayo was assigned to the AHL). And since none of Lehner, Stone or Patrick are coming off LTIR this regular season they can spend up to that nearly-$8M at the trade deadline on rentals without having to worry about one of those three getting cleared to play & counting against their cap again. All this while still holding on to a 1st, two 3rds & a 7th this year as trade capital.
Meanwhile Arizona gets a contract that is likely fully insured or close to it, so their actual financial obligation is minimal, and they get to hit the cap floor easier without grossly overpaying a free agent or trading for an active player with an albatross of a contract like Zaitsev. Going full-kid rebuild means there likely won't be any won't be any sort of cap squeeze until after Weber's contract ends, as Guenther, Cooley & the other recent high picks will all have their ELCs end at the same time or later. No FA in their right mind is signing there so long as they're at Mullet Arena either, so they've got to hit the floor somehow.
Buffalo's doing roughly the same thing right now with Bishop's contract, they're just not getting heat for it since their build is much further along.
Honestly pretty good & clever move for both sides.
