Description
Just in light of speculation the blues are in on Meier. Wanted to gauge cap and where they could get to while moving a couple of firsts for him.

Defense still somehow needs to be addressed. Too many defensemen that are bad at defense and then Parayko and a 3rd pair. Options could be move Parayko and move to a full transition style defense. Or move Leddy/Krug if possible and bring in a shut down guy to keep Parayko's usage the same (attempt #4).

Scandella dump added as he's the only one without a full NTC and only has a year remaining on deal.

Good news is the Blues if they did go out and get Meier, could conceivably qualify Meier and not be forced into a pickle doing so.

Teams still probably gonna be mediocre for a year until some depth scoring or the salary is realigned a little differently on the 3rd line. But this 3rd line adds alot of physicality and can chip in a little.

Forget moving Colt. We gotta move the LDs out. The RDs will be fine with proper partners.

This would be my preferred avenue. Tbh my preferred avenue is a hockey trade of Krug for a guy that can handle the role and effectively move the puck. The main one that would come to mind would be Hanifin in Calgary, but I doubt Krug would waive for there or they would even consider it tbh.

I think Leddy could be ok with Faulk in the role that Krug is currently in. I'd be a bit concerned about our powerplay production at that point though, sadly i dont think perunovich is going to be a mainstay at the NHL level with us. He's had too many injuries that seem to happen every season and he's losing his waiver exemption. Going to be hard to give him a clear shot.

I just can’t wrap my head around barbashev getting a first, even if there’s a cap dump in there. Seems insane to me.

I think Boston is the only team that does it, and realistically it's due to them not having anything else to move that makes sense. I dont see the Blues really being interested in a 25 2nd and a 23 3rd for him.

Not sure either, figured something close to what Horvat got is probably expected. Almost put one of the 1sts and Bolduc instead, figured they were both fairly close value. I just don't logically see how you pay much more than 2 1sts albeit late or a 1st and a top end prospect. Maybe a roster piece is added, but I doubt it's significant. I still don't think they'll outbid Jersey, but I just wanted to see what the cap would look like

It's really not entirely whacky. Best comps for him that I can think of are Jarnkrok and Copp. Both were acquired via a bit more quantity versus quality, but it's not entirely too far off. Jarnkrok was a 2nd in 22, 3rd in 23 and a 7th i think in 23 or 24. Personally I think Barbashev's physicality and versatility would push his value up a bit over Jarnkrok. Then add in the cap dump on top you're starting to near towards it being fairly logical to look at what's conceivably the 32nd pick in the draft.

I would want more for Horvat for sure for Meier, especially if it’s with an extension. Would snuggerud be on the table?

I’m real sick of the, “the pick will surely be at the end of the round.” So are most contenders picks. Let’s move on from that narrative.

There have been a lot of really credible reporters that have suggested that this draft is viewed as so strong that a 2nd in 23 might exceed a 24 1st in value. That’s saying something. If it’s going to be a first going to the blues, there better be something else coming back to Boston.

Highly doubtful. Almost extremely unlikely. I doubt that our 1st would be either. Figured the Horvat comp was fairly comparable given Meier is an RFA but a 10m QO is a bit ridiculous. Could see something like Tor 1st 23 + Bolduc + Tor 2nd 24 + like a 3rd or something. We don't really have anything comparable to Beauvillier and i'm not sure where his value was. But i'd venture to say that Bolduc is fairly similar if not a bit better of a prospect than Raty. The first is obviously a little worse. I just don't see how you can really view Meier much higher than Horvat given production + Position and considering the acquiring team is most likely going to have to shell out 9m+ in cap space to keep him long term.

I'm aware of that. Maybe in your mind Boston doesn't make as much since as it does in my mind which is fine. But if Boston's acquiring him I don't see how it happens without the 23 1st unless they wish to defer the 1st to 24 which doesn't make a whole lot of sense given where they're at.

I did, the only thing you said was talking about being sick of hearing a late pick. And then the reports of a 2nd in 23 being a first round equivalent value. (I know what you are talking about here and it's mainly to do with the speculation that there's probably 40 1st round talent type of players in this draft.

I'm not sure where I was off with what I responded in regards to what you had said. I don't know what else you'd want in return that's feasible if the first is moving. I just am not really sure what would be expected. The Blues don't really have pieces left that would be moved and Boston doesn't really have alot of holes so where does it line up at. This is giving cap space if another move is to be made and it's not really asking for anything aside from the 1st.

Not sure San Jose wants late picks unless it’s both and bolduc. The QO for Meier is blown way out of proportion and I think will ultimately be a none issue if a team really steps up

We don't need an LD back in a Krug trade. There are several more suitable Colt partners available in free agency. Krug I could live with keeping, but one of them absolute has to go without too much pain. We could easily get two defensive minded LDs this summer. And Colt/Faulk/Rosen have done just fine in their PP time. If Army moves an LD, he's a hero. If he moves both without going over a barrel, we need a statue.

I mean i don't think it's blown out of proportion. You have to alot 10m if you want to consider him an RFA. He's essentially a UFA. Extension is one thing but that's no different than a UFA trade at that point is the QO portion of it. It surely doesn't hurt his value, but it is going to be alot more of a deal comparative to a UFA than a typical high end young RFA where you're gauranteed cheap team control years.

Colt's got a hard shot but he's not really an effective distributor. I don't really see him as a power play weapon. Faulk I could consider. I just find it hard to hold faith in Rosen being as good going forward as he has been this season or at least considering it a certainty. Would like a bit more of a certainty. But i agree, we could stand to move out both of them and i would be more than happy seeing the 3rd pair be given to Rosen/Tucker. UFA contracts scare me for defensemen. It's almost certain that if we do hand one out it's not going to be a pretty contract unless we take a major risk.

I doubt these LDs will be too pricey. There's loads of them, so if you act quick bargains are to be had. Orlov, Soucy, Graves, Gavrikov and more. All probably sign in the 3-5 range, medium term.
