I suspect the Flames have almost no leverage with Weegar's current level of play and his huge 8 year extension. We also do not know if his current contract was amended to include a NTC. If it was, the Flames lose further leverage.
Whoever takes Weegar is getting him for pennies on the dollar. Similar to Marino this off season who went for a struggling prospect and a 2nd. That is also keeping in mind that Marino's contract wasn't anywhere near the commitment that Weegar's is.
I could see a change of scenery move with Batherson for Weegar, since the Senators cannot keep both Batherson and Debrincat and add a defenseman long term. Batherson seems like a perfect candidate for the Senators to trade at his lowest point, and have breakout as an absolute stud the next year. He was the Senators best forward in 2021-22, and has been pretty bad this season.
Also, the Flames won't want to take the Zaitsev contract, but they could bring Arizona into the deal and send him there.
At the end of the day, I don't see the Flames getting a 1st or a top prospect for Weegar. Cap is too valuable right now, and there will be too many teams who are afraid of how poorly he has done since leaving Florida. It would be different if he had a shorter or mid-term deal, but adding him at 8 years at #2 D money is going to be too much risk to drum up a big trade market for him.
