What a Myers to TOR trade might look like

Description
Buffalo has a ton of cap space next year, and probably won't be in need of using retention slots, so it makes them a good 3rd team. They could add an 8m player next year, and still, comfortably fill out the rest of their roster.

A corresponding move will need to be made to be compliant

Vancouver has been clear that they won't pay to move Myers and view him as a positive asset (whether other teams do is up for debate). I think it would probably be a scenario where Vancouver does get minimal assets though. Something like:

Vancouver: 3rd (via Toronto), $1.5m retention on Myers
Arizona: 4th (via Vancouver), $2.25m retention on Myers
    Toronto: Myers $2.25m

Toronto gets Myers at just over $2 mil for a 3rd, Vancouver gets minimal value in upgrading from a 4th to a 3rd, and Arizona gets a 4th for the extra retention.

Just saw your reply on the other thread, do you think they would give up McDonough (if he's not willing to sign)?

I might be overestimating how much a 3rd team would want to retain for 1.5 years on Myers, but I think they get a 4th for 0.5 a year.

I think McDonough could definitely be moved with a RHD prospect coming back. Don't think Hollowell is the right guy though since he's a small offensively-minded defenseman, which Vancouver already has too many of. Maybe something like:

Vancouver gets: Villeneuve/Niemela, retain $1.5m on Myers
3rd team gets: McDonough, retain $2.25m on Myers
    Toronto gets: Myers @ 2.25m

Villeneuve would probably be straight up, but Vancouver probably has to send Toronto a 2nd/3rd if they want Niemela. Very interesting idea though. I do think Vancouver should move McDonough for a RHD regardless as they need the defensive help but don't need any more wingers.

In what world - other than Canuck delusional land - does it make any sense for Leafs to give up anything for Myers, even if he was 75% retained? He’s not an upgrade on any of our D now so wasting assets & cap space on him is pretty questionable idea

It is a questionable move for sure, although I don't think the question is "who is Myers an upgrade over?" but rather "can he fill the role of a physical defender?" and "if he could be a Holl replacement for next year?". He might be the 7th defender next year though and at 2m-2.5m that would be a waste of cap, but that might be viewed as a problem for next year.

In terms of giving up assets for Myers, I could see Dubas giving up a D-prospect like Hollowell+4th or Villaneuve, or something like that which is relatively low cost. I just did a future 3rd here, since I'm not too sure what Buffalo would want, maybe McDonough would be enough, but I would rather overestimate here. I could see Dubas taking on Myers at a higher cap hit and receiving assets, but I would find that highly questionable since that probably means taking him at 3.5-4m.

At 2-2.5m, I don't mind the addition for the Leafs, but I would hope that they are making a relatively significant addition up front, like a Giordano-type trade at the least for someone who can play 2LW.
