Gavrikov extends for $4.5 mil/yr AAV.
Meier extends for $9.5 mil/yr AAV.

Calgary will figure out who to move to free up the cap space for next year during the summer. Top candidates to move will be Tanev and Toffoli, maybe Backlund but only if they can't make it work any other way.

Really, why don't you tell us what your Jets would offer?

Why is that? Gavrikov isn't bad, he's better defensively and more physical than Hanifin. We have enough offensive and/or two way defensemen without Hanifin. Another big gritty defenseman will be more useful for the playoffs and the push to the playoffs. Also that Columbus 2nd is going to be almost as good as a late 1st which is going to be needed for Meier. Or would you rather have Hanifin than Meier too?

Gavrikov and Hanifin are completely different types of players; and Gavrikov would be a nice addition come playoff time, but right now they need Hanifin to GET INTO the playoffs. I don’t see CAL moving Hanifin & Magiapane, plus its not enough going out to get Gavrikov & Meier. Coronato and/or Pelletier would have to go to get SJS & CBJ to bite since both want younger assets as part of these deals

We don't need Hanifin to get into the playoffs. we need more scoring from the forwards and another defenseman who's better defensively than Hanifin more durable than Tanev who hits more and harder than either. Mangiapane is the same age as Meier, Hanifin is younger than Gavrikov, if a 1st and a 2nd in this year (a deep draft) don't count as young assets then what does?

$9.5mil/yr is too much for Meier. He worth between $7.875 (Fiala) $8.125 (Kyrou & Thomas) and $8.5mil (Forsberg). No more. He’s not a Super Star like Tkachuk, Gaudreau or Huberdeau were at the time of their extension signings.

Meier is a better all round player more complete package than all of those except Tkachuk and as an RFA who might as well be UFA with that 10 mil QO he'll get paid accordingly. In fact Tkachuk is his best comparable. They're both big power forwards who can score, drive play, don't back down from physical play and will throw some hits. Meier is a little bigger a faster skater and more of a shooter than a playmaker, Tkachuk is a bit more of a net front presence a bit more of a playmaker than Meier and a big pest.

Meier’s never scored over 40 goals and he’s never put up more than 1.00PPG+

Tkachuk on the other hand has scored over 40Goals and hit 1.27PPG, which is 28% more offence than Meier…

Tkachuk and Draisaitl play at a level above Meier

Better to circle back and see if NAS and Forsberg want a change

People forget that meier is in thr spotlight now because he's in trade talks and coming from a flames fan might expect you see him a bit more the sharks are in of those teams that everyone forgets about till it comes to something like trade talks and there is a reason he is at the top of the board for bait he plays with as much grit as anyone out there and can control play for periods of the game all on his own he is worth what he will be paid all day long

Meier = Fiala, Forsberg, Thomas, Kyrou, Brady Tkachuk = $7.875 to $8.5mil/yr.

Maybe he negotiates $250-500k/yr more, but that’s more than his fair comparables and value

all the flamers need to do is accept who they are, which is a middling team, just like the wild.and for the first time in 30 yrs, dont take the easy way out, and patch things together, trying to make the playoffs, so ownership can get a couple of playoff dates, before they go out in the first rd.and actually try to build something that could win a cup.you do that by drafting.so a good starting point would be to not give away your 1st pick this yr.

You are counting the 2nd rounder from CBJ, which is never happening in a deal like this; pick and/or prospect needs to be going to CBJ….so that upends your apple cart going to SJS, which is why the other younger pieces are needed to this deal. And CBJ may be interested in Hanifin, but seem to be looking a couple of years younger on D men

What are you talking about?! Hanifin is worth much more than Gavrikov.

And what makes you think CBJ is looking for picks and prospects? They just signed Gaudreau to a long term contract and Laine to a 3 year bridge contract at 8.7 mil/yr. CBJ is looking to be competitive soon not rebuild.

Value is subjective…and obviously you want Gavrikov in CAL, and are willing to part with Hanifin to get him, soooo……

Is Hanifin a better offensive Dman? Yes….Is Gakrikov better defensively, physically, and overall? Also, yes….they are just different players and if you want Gavrikov from CBJ you are going to have to pay a premium for him. That is the reality of the TDL

As for the CBJ rebuild v. retool, I guess we will see if Gavrikov, Jenner and Merzlinkins are still on the roster

Calgary loses this trade. This arguably only moves them sideways in competitiveness and they lost a 1st rounder.

For this year maybe but it makes them bigger, younger and better in the future. They'd be getting the best player in the trade too.
