The Athletics proposed trade

Créé par: Byrr
Équipe: 2022-23 Maple Leafs de Toronto
Date de création initiale: 8 févr. 2023
Publié: 8 févr. 2023
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Why the Canucks do it:

'Vancouver would recoup a pair of quality draft picks and after this season, gain $3.7125 million in cap space for the next three years. That cap flexibility would be huge, whether you’d want to leverage it to upgrade the blue line or take bad short-term contracts from other teams for sweeteners. You could probably retain a bit on Kerfoot, whose contract expires at the end of this season, and cash him in for an asset at the deadline too. The Canucks should prioritize acquiring premium draft picks and cap flexibility in the next building phase and that’s exactly what this deal would accomplish.'

Why the Leafs do it:

'The upside of a deal like this is it allows the Leafs to add pieces that (possibly) make their team better without moving the likes of Matthew Knies or any first-round picks. Perhaps the price for Schenn (a second-round pick in this scenario) is a little high but experience costs, I like the idea of adding some Stanley Cup-winning experience to be around the likes of Sandin and Liljegren this postseason.'

This would be a confusing trade for the Leafs to make. The Leafs need more scoring, so they're going to trade Kerfoot and a pick for a guy that has 3 more points than Kerfoot? On top of that the guy they're getting is more expensive and signed for 3 more years, aka the time frame in which all of the Leafs stars are due for new contracts.
Everybody you talk to will tell you that Kerfoot is a salary dump. If thats the case then so is Garland.
The Athletic is desperate for clicks I guess.

The thought would be that Garland has more to give. He was one of the leagues top scorers(pretty sure the top scorer) at even strength last season and has a history of bigger production than Kerfoot.

Over the past 2 seasons Garland has just 4pts more than Kerfoot. Before that yes, he was more productive, but Dubas is on the hot seat, he isn't about to pay for the hope that a guy can reclaim his game from years prior (at least not in this case, where the player would come at a cost of 4M per season for 3 more years).
Kerfoot plays C and plays on the PK as well as the 2nd PP unit. Garland doesn't play the PK and doesn't play the middle.
So Kerfoot is cheaper, more versatile, used in more situations and is a pending UFA
vs
Garland, who is more expensive, less versatile, used in less situations and is overpaid for 3 more years (even with salary retention).
.
It doesn't make sense and this "rumour" is based on nothing more than the fact that Dubas tried to acquire Garland a couple of years ago, but obviously decided against it, combined with the fact that he is now untradable in this salary cap landscape, but they want something to talk about and the Leafs get clicks.

I don't think Kerfoot gets traded. Keefe likes having the option of putting him at C if Matthews or Tavares go down with an injury. He's a Swiss Army knife.

I don't understand the Garland fascination with Leaf fans. 🤔

Probably a bad move for Leafs, but I could see them doing it.

Garland with MULTIPLE years of retention is worth more than the 3rd and 2nd, so them adding Schenn AND taking what is a cap dump is way off. Kerfoot has some value, but what contender who want a UFA to be has the cap space, and what non-contender will take him for free? None, so unless TOR is adding another 2nd for Schenn and eating Kerfoot = not enough.

Top scorer at 5v5 has been Matthews for years I think. Garland did have a high 5v5 production as well, so I think that and that he scores a bit more goals than Kerfoot is the reason for the Athletic's suggestion, but I think I would have to agree that Keefe would prefer Kerfoot because of his ability to play center, not just for injury depth but the PK as well.

Dubas was interested in Garland before he was traded to Vancouver, so I think he would be interested in this trade but I think it would depend on being able to land a solid 3C (probably trades Holmberg in that trade).

Can’t see it; Garland is just way overpaid (& undersized). Schenn is too slow & absolutely not needed. Kerfoot is not going anywhere; Leafs made that clear in expansion draft.
Leafs should be aiming a lot higher than this

By exposing him?

By trading for McCann and exposing them both; otherwise they could have just exposed Kerfoot, no? They basically sacrificed Hallendar to keep Kerfoot - could be wrong, but that’s how i see it
