Treliving is a good GM but I don't think he's good enough to create 6 mill in cap space out of thin air. We can barely afford Bo this year.

I think one of coleman, mangiapane, backlund, hanifin would be the sacrifice to make a deal like this work for next year

better offensively. worse defensively. somethings gotta give

Hanifin in particular is one year from needing a big raise so I think we could cash out on him for a few picks or depth players

Phillips is an absolute zero value player in a trade, Zary and a 1st (which has to be 2023) is a lot for a team on the bubble with no guarantee of re signing Horvat.

Wouldn't sacrifice any of them for Bo. Just like Kadri last year he's clearly overperforming. There are far more fitting rentals for us that aren't going to be as highly targeted from the rest of the league.

Also 1.5-2M is not a "big raise" especially with the cap jumping up that year

that's why I said Horvat agrees to an extension in the trade. the AHL leading scorer has 0 value?

There are worse rentals* available sure. this team needs a goal scorer. the rumored list of Tarasenko being the best the flames are currently looking at isnt gonna be a difference maker. any of those 4 guys is worth less than horvat.

Flames are paying way too many middle six forward 5-6mil plus. i think we need to thin out the middle and stack the top a little more.

Hanifin is coming up to UFA at the same time that we will be dishing out money for guys like lindholm, dube, backlund. some of these UFA's in 2024 are not going to be on the team following that summer so you might as well trade a couple nbow to get some value for them. even with the cap going up

Literally 0. He's a UFA at the end of the season he can go play in any AHL organization he wants next season.

You really think that offer within the division Gets Horvat extended long term? First off that offer is beaten league wide. And very doubtful that Allvin/JR trades Horvat within the division.

I bet he never hits 50 NHL games. 32 teams passed on him this season after he had a stud season last year with a sustainable shooting% and a half decent training camp this season he's shooting around 25%. Tons of undersized scorers in the AHL don't translate to the NHL it's been like that for the past handful of years.

he had a good season last year. hes having an elite season this year. you are correct if he isnt able to translate that success and overcome his stature then he may be a career ahl player. it only takes a bottom dwelling team to give him a chance and for him to take it for the opposite to happen though. He had a pretty weak training camp as he wasn't put in a position to succeed by the coaching staff who clearly had pre determined the make up of the team prior to camp. we can see this shifting as players like duehr, pelletier, Ruziicka are slowly stealing the pylon veterans spots.

Edit: Despite Sutters complete resistance

Pelletier, Ruzicka and Duehr all have a semblance of a 200ft game that earns trust with coaching staff's around the NHL, Phillips in his brief time looked like a powerpaly merchant that couldn't get any separation, Pelletier is averaging nearly 2 minutes less per game than Phillips did but looks significantly more impactful in the small sample size each has gotten. Pelletier's underlying numbers have been off the charts good, Duehr and Ruzicka fill way different roles, I don't think Phillips ever translates.

i agree pelletier is certainly farther along than phillips at a much younger age. he had less time on the ice but the same amount of shifts which tells me they are being deployed differently. i dont think phillips has the same potential as a guy like pelletier who has top 6 potential. Phillips has bottom six potential but two games is not a sample size. if it were up to me he'd get 10-20 games playing with other young players on a 3rd to 4th line role.

pelletier has had the benefit of playing with Duehr who has also looked good while phiullips played a lot with backlund/coleman/lewis who are all fine shut down players but they dont accentuate phillips skill type

my line up would be

Pelletier replaces lucic on the second line

then we have an energy 4th line of Phillips-Ruzicka-Duehr

What list are you referring to? Tarasenko is not a worse rental lol, he has 41 career playoff goals in 90 games. He may cost less to acquire than Horvat simply due to position but he is by no means an inferior player. You give Tarasenko Horvat's currently completely unsustainable shooting percentage and we are looking at a guy with 21 goals and 40 points in 35 games.

Coleman and Backlund are middle 6 forwards but both are certain roles and play it very well. Mangiapane is a player with clear top 6 potential that just happens to have most of his success with the 2 aforementioned. Toffoli, Kadri, Huberdeau, and Lindholm are all definitely top 6 players. So who are these other 5-6M middle 6 players?

Hanifin is coming up to UFA, I dont really see why that matters though Backlund's very likely not going to get a raise at his age (we will have a better idea on how much Backlund makes after the J. Staal eventual extension), and Dube isn't going to get a big raise either. Lindholm is the only one that will get a relevant raise. As for the other UFA's: Tanev like Backlund wont be getting a raise at his age, Zadorov and Kylington may be gone but end of the day they are more of depth players than Hanifin. No idea on Toffoli

Keep Phillips and the 1st round pick. Exchange for Dube and Kylington.

I've seen worse trades for bo but the 1st has to be this year. I feel like calgary needs a change at head coach. Sutter can go to pasture with Rutherford and lamoriello. Sutter can't intimidate the players anymore. They know he's a joke.
