Toronto doesn't have the pieces to even make a Horvat trade and all their ACGM's know it. It's not NHL 23 GM mode where you can keep adding Hirvonen, Voit, Niemala, Hollowell, Minten, or Robertson until the deal goes through. Canucks want a top RHD like Braden Schneider (just for comparison) and a good center like Nicolas Roy or something. Time to put Horvat to the Leafs to rest.

You have half a million in cap space here. Assuming that the cap rises one million and Justin Holl walks, you'll basically have $3.5 million to re-sign players plus the $9.75 million or so you have for Meier, Horvat and Kuzmenko. Meanwhile, you'll have to sign or replace those three players PLUS Bunting, Kampf, Holl and Samsonov. If Bunting gets something like Trevor Moore ($4 to $4.5 million) and Samsonov gets a little less, you're scrambling to create a full roster and all of the other replacements would have to be entry-level-contract type of players.

Even assuming that Meier gets only $7.5 million and Horvat gets only $6.5 million, I don't see how you could retain one of them and keep Samsonov, let alone keep the same quality as you have now,

Ottawa isn't desperate for a 3rd round pick so unless someone they projected going MUCH HIGHER is still on the board when that 3rd round starts there's no reason for them to give up a 2024 2nd rounder. Especially since they'll be looking to move Zaitsev after paying him the $2M bonus and that WSH 2nd could be a part of the deal.
