Yikes! Have they said what the injury is or if he's getting surgery?

Edit: I see its being reported that he's getting sports hernia surgery, no injury is good but thats gotta be a difficult one to come back from.

Super tough injury. Copp had it as well and took a long while to get back into form. Ladd was never the same after his. Crosby had it I think but he’s a freak athlete so not surprised he’s the same after it.

Jets seriously need to look at acquiring a top 6 winger.

They'd have to move out decent salary (not just an ELC or league minimum guy) to fit a top 6 winger in under the cap.

From a longer article in The Athletic (Murat Ates), emphasis added:

Will the Jets make a trade?

Winnipeg’s 10-4-1 record is the key stat here, implying that the Jets can win even without Ehlers in the lineup. But now Winnipeg knows he’s out long-term, and the team has lost Appleton and Morgan Barron to injuries, so the Jets’ challenge has grown.

The obvious answer appears to be to trade one of Winnipeg’s many defensemen for help up front. Prospect Ville Heinola has been called up after catching fire again in Manitoba but has yet to play, suggesting Winnipeg sees itself as deep on defense even with Logan Stanley injured and Dylan DeMelo battling a new, minor upper-body injury.

My guess is that Winnipeg takes a wait-and-see approach to the situation. The Jets’ record is terrific and most of it has been earned without Ehlers on board. Thus, the incentive for Cheveldayoff to trade a veteran defenseman away from a potentially playoff-bound team may be low. Maybe that changes if the forwards falter and the defense gets healthy but Cheveldayoff made it all the way through his offseason without clearing his logjam of defensemen, and that was before the Jets roared out to their 10-4-1 start. – Ates

Ehlers is going on LTIR. They’ll have nearly 8 million in cap space until he’s back… plenty of space. Plus maybe one of the D goes back in the deal. Maybe DeMelo for Garland.

But I saw your second comment and agree it’s likely they take a wait and see approach. Maybe lambert gets a brief stint.

Rumors and reports are saying that Chevy is looking for a young NHL ready forward with a small resume. Players that are likely to leave are Heinola and Stanley.

Even though he's not young, I would still do Kerfoot for Stanley. I would also love to see Lucius or Lambert get a few NHL games. Also Connor and Dubois need to play together more, they have undeniable chemistry.

EDIT: If Bones doesn't put Connor and PLD together, alternate solution would be Perfetti, Dubois, and Lambert (only if he gets a stint).

I do like the wait-and-see approach, considering the start we have. Also as of now, we have allowed the least amount of goals in the NHL with 35. Though the Bruins are behind us with 36.

I do think Stanley is a must-move as Samberg is playing better than him. Especially last game, Samberg was noticeable a lot of times.

I agree on Stanley for kerfoot deal but doubt Toronto does it. I could see jets moving Heinola for a F with a similar situation to Heinola. Man that hypothetical Robertson for Heinola deal Seravalli posted the other day seems super realistic.

I doubt they do LTIR, as it is still early in the season and cap space accrual could come in very useful at the TDL. Also since Ehlers is expected to come back before the playoffs, then they'd have to jettison that cap space to be compliant in 6-12 weeks if they take the LTIR route. If results falter and they do trade for a top 6 winger like garland it could take the form of Garland for DeMelo + ELC just to make the salary work and have some wiggle room.

Sure they might keep him off LTIR, but if they have to put him on there for the sake of making a big move I’m sure they would.

If Ehlers comes back in 6-12 weeks and you don't move out salary when making a big move, they Jets will be axed to sell to get rid of cap space and be fleeced in order to be cap compliant. If this were a Kane or Kucherov situation then go for it, but it isn't as far as we know today.
