Just as many as Mitts would, Pageau could migrate down to the 4th line though, he's more physical, plays as well or better on D, the downside is his contract length, but if kids out play him they can use him as a 13th forward

They're literally the same except Mitts is younger and more skilled and JGP is more physical

Pageau is miles better defensively, he’s on PP1 and PK1, is a faceoff god, and shuts down opposing teams top lines. He’s the perfect 3C with good analytics and this Islanders team is not the same without him. Also JGP is a Lou acquisition so there’s no chance he’s traded, plus he has a NTC. Mittelstadt has a chance to be better than Pageau in the future, but the islanders are built to win now and aren’t taking a downgrade at 3C for a chance to be better a few years down the road.

And is Mittelstadt really all that good considering literally all of your recent ACGMs have him traded?

I hate Mittlestadt, but I've heard literally all of the same arguments from Mitts defenders that you have listed here:

Is it worth trading for a 5m 30 year old Pageau, who has the same offensive stats as Mittlestadt per game played? Yeah I know points aren't everything, but is cap difference worth it?
PLus Pageau has M NTC.....

Yes, the Sabres get beat up night in and night out. They'll get the same production but get a physical presence instead of someone who dangles but can't do a pull up. Sabres have enough players that can dangle

Pageau has won 58% of his faceoffs this year, and is always around 55%. Mittelstadt is at 52% this year, and it’s his first time above 50%. And just because Mittelstadt plays those minutes on a poor team like Buffalo, it doesn’t mean he’s deserving of them/even close to JGP’s level.

According to JFresh’s player cards, Mittlestadts projected WAR is 49%, with 10% EV Defense. JGP is at 83% and 75% respectively.

Isles easily decline, end of story.

Not at all IMO this is just because people have a weird hatred for Mitts.

Hes not good, but people continue defend him, so its not that weird. He doesnt even have the good defensive or possession numbers that people claim and has 1 5v5 point

I mean, based on this sterling recommendation, the Islanders should be just falling over themselves to make this trade huh

Okay, and JGP does all those things, arguably better than Mittelstadt, and he's got 7 of his 9 points at 5v5 this season. He's arguably the better player today, and the Islanders are obviously built to win today, so why are they even answering the phone on this offer? It's basically trading JGP for a guy who's younger and *might* one day be the type of player Pageau is.

so again: why do the Islander make this deal? There's nothing in it for them: they're getting the worse player, and they're not in any position where they need to move cap out.

that doesn't answer the question. If I said to you "hey we both have the same phone, except mine is the slightly newer model that's better at taking pictures and yours is better at streaming video, let's trade em" would you do that? Especially if you're more interested in streaming videos than taking pictures? Or would you expect me to offer something more to my side to convince you to give up the perfectly working phone that you have?

And if Mittelstadt's calling card is that he's a more skillsy player than Pageau, I'd expect a little more than 1 assist so far this year at 5v5 when his primary even strength linemates are Victor Olofsson (7-1-8 at 5v5 this year), Rasmus Asplund (1-4-5), and Jack Quinn (1-1-2). Really gives off some passenger vibes if he's getting nothing while his linemates are thriving.

Older models die off faster so while it's working now by the start of next season it could be useless and now I'm stuck with a dead old phone that I'm paying 2x as much for for 2x as long of a contract, that's the trade off.

Pageau literally just turned 30, so it's not like we're talking about a Letang situation where he's signed through his age-40 season - and I'd argue that he'd have to fall off a cliff production-wise for his contract to age terribly. His age 32/33 seasons might be a little rough, but the contract is also structured in a way that buying out the last year or two is not going to kill the cap (salaries are $4M & $3.5M in the last two years of his 6x$5M, so cheaper buyouts.)

man, I wouldn't know what to say to that. most analytics aren't really meant to show much of anything in a small sample size, and neither of these guys have hit 20 GP on the season yet. i never wanna sit here and just go "points, eye test, plus/minus" all day long because they don't tell the whole story, but there's just not enough data at this point in the season to glean anything useful from the metrics. hell, Dom @ the Athletic just released his first GSVA leaderboard - and Pageau (0.1) barely beats out Mittelstadt(0.0). Sure can tell a ton from those numbers!
