Hooo Leee there is a lot going on here, lets dive in.

Matthew Phillips, diminutive right handed center putting up huge numbers in the WHL and point per game at the AHL level, at 5'7" and 140 lbs he is tiny, but has a chance to make it at the NHL is he can be fast and smart enough to avoid big hits. May never see much of the show, but will make the Gulls fun to watch, he has some value.

Kevin Rooney, NHL capable bottom 6 utility forward, gritty grinder type guy, basically seems to be an exact copy of Grant, so not sure why either are here, but hey, whatever, its a straight swap, so sure?

Connor Zachary, 20 year old 24 OA pick in 2020, was doing well at the WHL level, seems to be completely out of his depth at the AHL level, scored 2 assists last year at the U20 WJC for team Canada in 7 games, and 25 points in 53 games with the stockton heat. Reclamation project, possible bust, going to put his value next to zero.

Milan Lucic at 50% retained because why, exactly? The ducks are in no cap problems, so this honestly makes no sense other than to try and lessen the ask to eat his cap dump from a 2023 2nd. Lets call this paid for by the 2025 3rd.

Now we are down to the payment for Comtois, which is a 1st, a 2nd, and Matthew Phillips.

Yeah, Anaheim takes the money and runs on this one. Hell, we'd probably prefer you didn't retain salary and still make this deal.

The reason I traded zary was because he was a first rounder only two years ago he’s still going to have some value lucic was so Calgary could sign some free agent’s and I retained and gave you a first anyways because Calgary is looking like a playoff team at least so that pick could be a late or mid first anyways so it’s compensation for eating up his contract even though you have a lot of cap that pick will probably be a later pick and we are saving you money by retaining so idk why you would question it. Matty Philips is a lifelong minor league guy who is good in the minors but I don’t know if he could make the jump since he’s so use too the minors so that could be a hit or miss Rooney is meh ok depth but not the best player so basically the main trade is lucic zary Philips a first and second for comtois and then the second trade is Rooney and the 3rd for grant

To be clear, the Ducks would agree to this trade even if you didn't salary retain on Lucic. We might even prefer that you didn't retain, as it allows us to be more aggressive sellers at the trade deadline without worrying about being over the cap floor.

Who the hell would you sell off you wouldn’t be able to get a return for kllingburg without retaining 50% and lucic too soo like 🤷‍♂️

We're retaining on all the contracts we flip for picks, that's how we're going to get better picks for them.

Klingberg 50% retained is 3.5 mil
Shattenkirk 50% retained 1.95 mil
Lucic 50% retained 2.625 mil

Right now we are only ~2 mil over the cap floor. Moving Kling and Shat alone puts us about ~3 mil under the floor even with retention, swapping Comtois for Lucic contact wise and then shipping Lucic our retained and we are still 2.5 mil under the floor, now that's contract and roster space we have to take back, which may not be that appealing depending on our trading partners.

Detroit gladly accepts 2 picks for a guy that will miss at least half the season, if not the entire season...

His name is Zary not Zachary and the reason he had a down season last year is he BROKE HIS ANKLE blocking a shot in training camp and missed a bunch of games at the start of the season. He's not a bust or reclamation project. He was looking good in camp last year prior to breaking his ankle and he's looking good again now. If he keeps playing the way he did in the young stars tournament and first few days of camp he'll be ahead of Pelletier on the depth chart again soon.

Comtois, Maxime
Grant, Derek

For

Lucic, Milan ($2,500,000 retained)
Rooney, Kevin
Zary, Connor
Phillips, Matthew
2024 1st round pick (CGY)
2024 2nd round pick (CGY)
2025 3rd round pick (CGY)

Would be a massive overpay for Comtois and Grant.

First off Calgary isn't going to be selling low on Zary just because he broke his ankle blocking a shot last year. Even if you took Zary out it'd still be a big overpay. Comtois is a project, Grant is a replacement level depth player. Neither one is worth Zary or a first.

Looch with 50% retention wouldn't cost much to dump and could even fetch a positive return from a team like the Ducks. Even without retention it probably wouldn't take a whole lot to get the Ducks to take him. Looch's signing bonus is already paid there's only 1 million in actual salary left on his contract but he still carries a 5.5 million cap hit to help the Ducks get to the cap floor. He's also exactly the kind of player the Ducks need to protect all their young skill players.

Zary to Zachary was my spell check getting overly agressive, apologies. Didn't know about the ankle, made my assessment based on his stats.

But let's cut the crap about the salary floor, we are well over the floor at this point, so we don't need any "help" getting there. Before you respond about after the TDL, we can easily take enough salary back as part of our TDL deals to stay compliant, we will likely have to in order to make those deals work.

But I agree, this deal is massively in favor of the Ducks and Calgary shouldn't make it.
