Description
So, I decided it'd be fun to predict (guess) who I think will lead in important categories this coming NHL season. (22-23) It would be fun if you guys decided to voice your opinions in a constructive manners, and keep in mind, scoring is pretty unpredictable, since players can have down years, or career years, and they can develop, break out, or bounce back. Few people would've predicted Kreiders 50 goal campaign, or Josi getting almost 100 pts on the blue line, so take my ratings with all the salt in the dead sea, and try not to yell at me. Also, I didn't include any exact totals, cause that would've taken hours, and ultimately been kinda pointless (pun intended)

Ok, here's the categories:

LW - Points
C - Goals

RW - Rookie Points

LD - Defenseman Points
RD - Defenseman Goals

G - Goalie SV%

PP1 - Powerplay Points (left to right)
PP2 - Powerplay Goals (left to right)

Heh. Not only do you not have Josi in the Dmen goal leaders (which is just cuckoo), but also no Faulk or Letang or Carlson? Instead you think Seider will be third??? And McAvoy, who's never scored more than 10 and will miss a decent chunk of the season? Fox? That category needs an overhaul, my dude.

Makes no sense. He's still listed in the top-10 for goals, but somehow the 2nd best passer in the league doesn't get enough assists to make the top-10 points?

If history tells us anything, both McDavid and Draisaitl will be top-10 in both goals and points. Evander Kane likely makes the top-10 for goals.

ID expect Pastrnak to have an uptick from last year's 40. He had a really understandbly slow start to the year - now has Krejci and Hall most likely on his line. id expect him to be above Debrincat and co.

FIrst of all, he's not the 2nd best passer. 2nd of all, I forgot to put him in the top 10 points, that's mb

Not really, I just forgot to put him on the points list. as long as he's with McDavid, he's gonna be at least top 10 in both goals and points. (Not saying he's not a great player on his own, it's just players like McDavid guarantee extremely high totals for his linemates)

I agree. He probably scores ~50 so you're right, he probably finishes 5th or 6th, but then again I'm not omniscient and nothing in this league is guaranteed.

Kane is a maybe, but his sample size is still too small to judge. Esp since he's never had an 82-game season, his highest career goal total is 30, and he's closing in on 32 years old. We'll see tho.

I mean.. this is a subjective list and the Edvinsson and Raymond placings are more down to my Swedish bias

Either way, my picks aren't exactly unprecedented:

Like Seider, Fox and Makar both had great 1st seasons, followed up by respective Norris trophies, so suggesting Seider can potentially finish that high isn't exactly an extremely bold take.

Raymond is a bit more out there, but I like his style of play, and on an upward trending Red Wings team with a stronger dcore, meaning he can focus more on offense, he could really break out. I mean he was scoring at a 40+ goal, point per game pace before he hit the wall, which is what happens to most Europeans coming to the NHL, especially ones that are 19 years old.

Edvinsson is one of the best rookies in this class and seems to be on a similar caliber of Seider, who finished 4th in points this year. 3rd is a tad high, so I moved him down to 5th. Then again, rookies are always extremely unpredictable.

Husso at 9th is not exactly bold, given he just put up a .919 SV%. I'd say he's an underrated goalie, and should do good with the Wings.

I did not know about McAvoy's injury, I'm not a Bruins fan and I'm not omniscient. Kris Letang is 35, John Carlson.. well I see your point there a bit, and Justin Faulk scored 5 goals and 16 pts 2 seasons ago, he's not exactly consistent.

Seider could easily have a similar trajectory to Fox and Makar, so predicting him at 4th isn't exactly unprecedented. Fox could easily also have an upswing in goals, and 4th in points is a pretty solid bet for him.

He just put up 104 pts, and will be playing in one of the best forward cores in the league. It's bold but not unreasonable.

Draisaitl played with McDavid less than 25% of the time last season at 5v5. He'll be in the top-5 whether he plays on McDavid's line or not. Top-5, not top-10. He's been consistently in the top-5 for a while now:

2018-19: 2nd goals, 4th points
2019-20: 4th goals, 1st points
2020-21: 4th goals, 2nd points
2021-22: 2nd goals, 4th points

As for your list, you're still missing McDavid in the goals list. Past 2 years goals:
1. Matthews: 101
2. Draisaitl: 86
3. McDavid: 77
4. Ovechkin: 74
5. Kaprizov: 74

Past 2 years points:
1. McDavid: 228
2. Draisaitl: 194
3. Huberdeau: 176
4. Matthews: 172
5. Marner: 164
6. Gaudreau: 164

McDavid can score as well as anyone not named Auston Matthews.

Faulk has scored 15 or more goals four times now (including last season when only one of his 16 was on the PP), Letang has done it three times, . I think they're far better bets than anyone who would need to magically start scoring goals in droves for the first time ever. But hey, you never know.

1. I took out McAvoy
2. Adam Fox has 3 NHL seasons, and doubled his goal total from 2020-21 to 2021-22
3. Seider is a sophomore

"if you haven't scored goals in your first 3 NHL seasons, it is impossible for you to score goals after" essentially

If anyone would be scoring goals out of nowhere, it'd be Letang. He's turning 36 next season, and he was never really a goal scoring defenseman, he's never scored more than 16, and his average is closer to 10. Also remember, the scoring is usually what goes first for older players, so the odds of him being in the top 10 in goals for dmen feel pretty slim imo.

Most importantly tho, as I pointed out in another reply; this is a subjective list, no one can tell the future. I have a feeling Faulk will have a down year next season, I could very well be wrong; I think Seider and Fox will be good next season, and I could be wrong about that too.

Nitpicking? You're the guy who failed to put McDavid in the top-10 goals and Draisaitl in the top-10 points. Those are glaring mistakes, not nitpicking.

mistakes that I corrected days ago... Jesus. The problem is that to have them in both categories, I need to create a whole new player, and I just forgot to do so.

that isn't what I was referring to though by nitpicking. All I said was that Draisaitl having McDavid on his team makes his job easier. When he's on his line, he gets to be set up by McDavid as well as getting to pass to McDavid, that's a luxury few other players in the NHL experience. When he isn't on his line, his job is still easier, since McDavid's line draws the most defensively capable lines on the other teams, the strongest defensive pairings, which usually means Drai will face weaker competition. Plus, he still gets to play on PP1 with McDavid, which guarantees a lot of goals each year.

I'm not saying Draisaitl isn't one of the best players in the league regardless. A lesser player wouldn't get his points totals even with McDavid, cause no matter who you're playing with, putting up 50+ goals and 100+ points requires tremendous talent, which is something Drai obviously possesses. I'm a big fan of him, I personally think he's currently the 2nd best goal scorer in the league, and I think he's a bit underrated. I think he should be getting a lot more credit for what he does. All I meant was that when you're as good as Draisaitl, having McDavid on your team ensures you can utilize your talents just that much more. It's like how teams are sometimes better offensively when they have a good goalie.

McDavid may face the opposition's best defensive players, but Draisaitl faces the opposition's best offensive players.
