Crosby took 8 mill like what 6 years ago?

Yeah, MacKinnon thinks he took a discount because he wanted 1C money like guys like Stamkos and O'Reilly, Crosby could have gotten more than 8.7 but he's the most superstitious guy in the League. He's not really the comparable of what MacKinnon thought he was worth, btw he got signed before he broke out and he was getting criticism for not being good enough. My guess is that he wanted 7m+ but had to settle for 6.3 and since players didn't sign for 5-6 years to get another big payday he ebded up outplaying that contract by a ton as the market shifted. Pastrnak is also getting paid in the 6s, more than him but he was better.

14.5% of the cap on signing is not a discount.

He went from 17.3% the first time he signed 8.7 in 2008. Ovechkin had an 18%+ in 2008. Malkin signed a 15.43% or something like that in 2010. So, comparing him with the other top 3, guys, and his previous contract, he could have gotten more if he cared about % of cap rather than 8.7 aav.

Going from McDavid money to Matthews money is a discount. Got it.

Dater is just being Dater, trying to save his failing business with clickbait. The guy doesnt even follow the avs anymore, he lost his credentials bc of the question the previous offseason that pissed of Mackinnon. Dater is the lsat person to have any inside source info on mackinnon, the guy legit hates dater. He clowned on him in an interview before

Haha! I feel the same way about Dater. He's someone who doesn't understand personal accountability and is always trying to cover up his checkered past. His "pay-wall" site is garbage, full of grammatical and spelling errors.

When he signed it, it was worth 14.5% of the cap which is comparable with what Matthews was.

The cap just went up. Also he's a top 10 hockey player of all time, not much of a gamble.

I guess with LTIR if injuries took over it could be seen as less risky. A lot of money to pay if they fell apart. Though Crosby is special.

Leaving money on the table is a discount. He took a lower % of the cap and a lower AAV than he COULD have which is why Malkin had a higher AAV than Crosby after getting paid the same amount. There's no two ways about it, just because he's rich doesn't mean he couldn't have been richer without being overpaid mind you since neither Malkin or Ovechkin were overpaid and Crosby is just as good if you don't believe that he was the best.

Silver lining is that Crosby could potentially become the highest paid 40+ year old if he is still good and the Pens remain loyal, since he can probably get 8.7mx1 until he retires. So maybe until age 43 if he can pull it off like Jumbo Joe (although he was bad after age 40).
