I think the differences you see is contenders value these players different than teams eating cap dumps. I don’t think Bailey is a bad player, the same way I don’t think JVR is, but bottom feeders have set prices on their cap space that they all seem to adhere to. Like I said, I think there’s a debate to be had if moving Bailey and two 2nds for kadri is a good idea, but you’re not likely to find a better offer in august

Chiarot is a replacement level defenseman. He has a good reputation, just like Ristolainen did before he got traded to Philly. They are both terrible defenseman.

Assuming Kadri is signed and Bailey is traded, that leaves Lee/Barzal/Wahlstrom/Nelson/Kadri/Beauvillier/Parise/Pageau/Palmieri as the top 9. None of those players are coming out of the lineup for Kessel

Ladd cost 2 seconds, yes, but the cap was not hurting as badly as it is now. Patrik Nemeth cost 2 seconds and his contract is less money. Original post is pretty fair, teams with cap space have all the leverage. Over half the teams in the league are over or at the cap. Cap dumping Bailey to sign Kadri will cost at least 2 seconds, may even be a first.
