Getting old quick and that defense is looking mightily weak

Its not that weak when you think about it. Smith has NHL experience and led all defenseman in points his rookie year.

Just think that Smith isnt a solid 3LD and JPO isn;t solid as 2LD. Petry is coming off a real bad year, and the age of Letang and Petry might require a stronger defensive corps as a whole. Pettersen isnt a great dman but hes a better option at 2LD than either of the youngsters

And acquiring UFA to be Kane, is really a last chance at the okay corral.

Petry was battling through things. He couldnt see his kids or wife (cause of covid) and he didnt like the system. The last half of the season he was ppg because they got a new system

If Kane leaves he wants a contender, not a retirement home.
