Rebuild the Right Defense

Description
Canucks lose a lot of offense, but build a very strong D-core that can compete with the best teams in the league. Canucks get a lot of cap flexibility which they have not had in decades, and can make a lot of additions at the trade deadline to prepare for the playoffs.

Severson lives in Kelowna in the off season, and considers BC his home. Canucks RD depth chart gives him long term security as well. I am sure he will re-sign at the end of the year. And Horvat is the team captain, he likely re-signs before the start of training camp.

Note* Canucks are supposed to retain $1M in the JT Miller-Weegar trade
Transactions
1.
VAN
  1. Weegar, MacKenzie
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (CGY)
Détails additionnels:
Canucks lose a 1C, but add a Top 2 RD which is a bigger need.

Note* The trade is dependent on Vancouver re-signing Weegar (≈ $5.5x8 or $6x6)
CGY
  1. Miller, J.T.
Détails additionnels:
Calgary replaces Tkachuk on the roster. The retained salary balances out the cap hit in the trade (thus the 3rd round pick)

Note* The trade is dependent on Calgary re-signing JT Miller
2.
VAN
  1. Severson, Damon
Détails additionnels:
Canucks need another Top 4 puck moving defensemen
NJD
  1. Woo, Jett
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (VAN)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (VAN)
Détails additionnels:
New Jersey have a RD depth of Hamilton and Marino, who are signed for multiple years. And Nemec, the #2 OA pick this year, who likely starts the season in the NHL, after playing in a men’s league last year. Severson is unlikely to re-sign with New Jersey, considering the defensemen ahead of him in the depth chart. At least with a trade, they get something for him before he walks
3.
VAN
  1. Choix de 4e ronde en 2024 (DAL)
DET
  1. Pearson, Tanner
Détails additionnels:
It does not matter which team Pearson gets traded too. He has decent value on the market and should get a mid round pick as a return. He fits the Detroit system really well (hard to play against, great on the forecheck, good defensive play…), Yzerman will definitely be interested, considering he added guys like Chiarot, Copp, Perron in Free Agency who play a similar style to Pearson
4.
VAN
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
Détails additionnels:
Canucks add a 3C, Top 9 F
TOR
  1. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (CGY)
Détails additionnels:
Leafs get cap space to re-sign Sandin
5.
VAN
Canucks get much needed cap flexibility to accrue cap space during the season. The 1st round pick hurts, but it is necessary to maximize the team’s potential in the next 2 years
    ANA
    1. Myers, Tyler
    2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (VAN)
    Détails additionnels:
Anaheim add a 1st round pick for a cap dump, they need to get to the cap floor anyways, so it is a win-win

Note* The 1st round pick is Top 10 protected

Your explanation is the exact reason why New Jersey doesn't do that deal. Why would they need Woo?

Decent chance Severson gets traded, but if that's what the return is it'll be a deadline deal. No reason to trade Severson before then unless it makes the team better.

I agree one of Miller or Horvat should go right now. Team needs a shake up!

If both weegar and miller have confirmed re-signing deals I think more goes to the canucks. Weegars top pair but miller is 1C which is more valuable by a decent amount. Maybe turn the 3rd into a 2nd, or 1st. I don't like the severson trade, he is a UFA and will make 6+ mill on his next deal, and we have the opportunity to draft decent defensemen with the 2nd rounders.

Severson will be playing PP2 in Vancouver. Even with an injury to Quinn Hughes, he will be behind OEL on the depth chart. I doubt he gets more than 30-35 points. His defensive game isn’t all that great either. I think he signs a deal similar to Barrie, Tanev and Brodie (≈ $4.5x5)

New Jersey can have Linus Karlsson instead of Woo then. That doesn’t matter. The point is they get something back for Severson than losing him for nothing. Canucks take the risk of him walking to UFA too, so the price isn’t sky high for a rental. But two 2nds and a decent prospect (Karlsson projects to be an NHLer) is good enough return for a “rental” Top 4 D.

    Myers isn't a cap dump

Which team is taking $6M cap hit on their roster for 2 years? Do you think Canucks are the only team that have to clear cap space? Anaheim will have plenty of suitors, and Canucks will have to pay to get rid of Myers. This is a market where Bjorkstand (a legit 1st line winger) was traded for pennies on the dollar. Myers has little to no value, his cap hit + term only make him a negative asset

Appreciate your forethought on this matter.

Anaheim will obviously accept this trade.

I honestly don’t mind the Severson trade. I think the value coming back is pretty fair. However personally if I were the Devils I’d probably wait till the deadline and sell his services then, I firmly believe, barring injury he can get a 1st and prospect/2nd asset back from a team trying to make a cup run, especially if they retain 50% of the contract.

Banking on the idea of getting a bonafide top 4 D with a 2nd round pick is just completely asinine.

Leafs decline. Kerfoot hate has gotten out of control. Guy scored 51 points last year, is a versatile, borderline top 6 two-way player… if a third 2 years from now is truly all they can get for him on the trade market, they are keeping him.

I didn't say we could get him for a 2nd, I said I didn't like the trade. I just don't like the idea of paying severson and weegar 6+ mill while having hughes and OEL making 7 mill as well. Either we make the Severson trade or make the Weegar trade, but I would prefer to have Weegar since he throws many hits and is more of a defensive guy

VAN is not moving Miller to a division rival, and Miller is not signing a extension with CGY either.
