    I believe Orpik was bought out and resigned with Washington, not traded back. But I see why both scenarios wouldn’t be allowed.

    yes but it has to be a full calendar year later. so in this case it wouldn't work.

    It's considered cap circumvention the rule is you can not re-acquire a player traded away for a year

    orpik wasnt traded back to the caps. he was bought out. no rules have changed around that.
