Second Buyout Window

Description
This brilliant idea brought to you by Colorado fan and authority Richard88, one of CapFriendly's brighter lights. Stealth goalie prospect signing by me.

Now the entire current roster is preserved with no shenanigans. And any waivers-exempt prospect can be shuttled up and down no matter who might be on the IR list.

Note that there are some other interesting options for this type of acquisition -- players on minimum-like contracts whose teams might be happy to deal them, such as Keegan Kolesar and Zack MacEwen.

Idk if it’s worth buying out Myers just to sign Bear. Either way it seems like TBL is determined to go into the season with Myers.

The purpose is to keep the roster intact without having to trade anyone. Right now they're $7.2 million over and moving Seabrook to the LTIR list only gets them $6.875 million.

Tampa is already over the cap next year; the only deal here expires in one season, so it doesn't make that situation any worse. The purpose of this post is to show that Tampa doesn't have to sell off assets both this off-season and in 2023, too. Right now, without this transaction, Tampa is $7.2 million over the cap and moving Seabrook's cap hit to the LTIR list only gets them $6.875 million of space.

Myers gives TB the cap bonus this year but a cap hit next so yes it does.

It does if pissing in the ocean makes a difference in the water level. Tampa has 12 players under contract for next season totaling $79.7 million in cap. You make it sound like $633,334 is significant in a situation in which Tampa has to fit 11 contracts into $3.8 million. In that context, the difference between $3.8 million and $3.1 million is a rounding error.

So they give up a 2 for a slight upgrade in player maybe to be in a slightly worse situation and that's smart to you?

No, they give up a 2 in order not to trade Alex Killorn. THAT's smart to me.

There not trading Killorn when Bogo and Cirelli come back they send either Myers or Fluery down all good. If they don't pass through waivers 👍

Well, that's certainly a possible strategy, and the only obvious strategy right now, and exactly the strategy to which I was offering an alternative.

This is kind of a moot point, cause I'm pretty sure the 2nd buyout window is limited to players with an AAV higher than league average, which is 4M afaik, meaning he's not eligible to be bought out. Either way, it's kind of a waste, isn't it?

I think that having to break up the team that went to the Stanley Cup finals and/or trading Alex Killorn would be a bigger waste. A much, much bigger waste. As I recall, Tampa did just fine last season and all the way through the playoffs without Philippe Myers, and I think that they could probably replicate the same results without him again. The alternative is to risk putting Fleury on waivers, which, again, some might see as a perfectly acceptable risk.

I looked at it again, and not only are you right, but there's a second condition that also has to be met: the player has to have been on the team as of the prior trade deadline. Which, of course, doesn't apply to Myers.

Thanks for the education!

P.S. That's why @Richard88's original formulation involved Erik Johnson, who meets both requirements.

But you just can't buy him out. It's not allowed
