Rectifying Poor Decisions by Grier and How SJ Could Have Easily Won Free Agency

Description
1) SIGN MARCHMENT AND NIEDERREITER.

2) KEEP SJ 3RD AND LEONARD -- NO TRADE FOR KUNIN.

3) DON'T SIGN LINDBLOM OR NUTIVAARA (PLACED ON LTIR HERE).

4) DON'T BUY OUT BALCERS (HIS CAP HIT + LORETNZ AT 800K AS THE 24TH MAN ON THIS ROSTER ADDS UP TO HIS ORIGINAL 1.55MIL CAP HIT WITH SJ BEFORE THE BUYOUT, AND BECOMES 791.666K AFTER SUBTRACTING HIS $8,334 CAP HIT FROM THE BUYOUT).

5) TRADE OUT HILL BONINO AND SIMEK BY NOW (SIMEK IS UNDERSTANDABLY DIFFICULT TO JETTISON BUT HILL AND BONINO BOTH HAVE VALUE DESPITE NOT FITTING INTO SJ'S ROSTER WITH KAHKONEN+STURM TAKING THEIR PLACE AND IT'S MIND-BOGGLING THAT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN TRADED YET).

6) UPGRADE CAR'S 3RD TO A 2ND FROM THE BURNS DEAL BECAUSE HIGHWAY ROBBERY IS FROWNED UPON WHERE I COME FROM.

[ALL THIS = A BETTER ROSTER WHILE KEEPING OUR 3RD, LEONARD, BALCERS, AND SIGNING TWO GUYS WITH POSITIVE VALUE INSTEAD OF WELL... WHAT GRIER DID.]

[ALSO I'M NOT YELLING, JUST DECIDED NOT TO TURN OFF THE ALL-CAPS BUTTON BECAUSE IT SOMEHOW SEEMED APPROPRIATE NOT TO.]

see the problem is, if dallas offered marchment that contract with low taxes and a team that made the playoffs, theres no way he would take the same deal with the sharks
you'd have to pay more, or give him more years, and it's already risky as is for a guy with 1 big season...

similar for nino - why pay cali taxes when tennessee is cheaper and preds are a wildcard contender still

SJ is going into a rebuild (which is why Burns probably still decided to leave once talking to Grier) probably so signing Niederreiter and Matchment wouldn't make sense assuming they would have wanted to sign anyways. If they aren't in a playoff position expect Meier to be traded.

but i agree Greer has not been impressive at all and this team would be better if it could actually be assembled

i didn't understand why he traded down that far at the draft. feels like SJ should be looking for top prospects, not quantity over quality.

The guys on their radar were gone probably, so they traded down instead of taking a blind shot in the dark.

That's a valid point. But realistically, how much more would they command? Half a million to a million each? Another year on their deals each? That's still certainly very manageable if you ask me. I'd much rather slightly overpay for very good players at a higher cost (i.e. 4-5.5mil) than substantially overpay mediocre-at-best-to-straight-up-bad players at a lower cost (i.e. 2-3mil) which is what Grier did.

I don't think SJ should have traded down and agree with bagel bob but to me, Grier's abysmal approach to this offseason outside the draft through his trades and free agent signings (and nonsignings) dwarfs his decision to trade down at the draft.

i'm sure either the extra 0.5M$ or an extra year would do it
the danger is that they turn into another one of the sharks big contracts later...
it's a big risk, and probably makes them worse in the future, but if you really want to contend this year then it could work

and i agree on the lower guys, as a preds fan i was expecting to cut kunin... i didn't think he was worth the 2.3M QO let alone what Greer gave him

This draft was similar to last years where there's only certainty among the top guys, this draft was stronger I believe but teams worried about drafting Russian players and how other guys were dropping, they though the 2 seconds were worth it, especially if someone drops to them. Their guy might have already went as well, plus you never know how well those guys will turn out so don't be too quick to judge him on that. His non-signings on UFA is probably because they are going into a tear-down rebuild as much possible lol, which is why Burns probably decided to leave.

I wonder if they will try to trade Karlsson to Dallas once the dust settles if Dal still needs a RD and there are no good options for them out there assuming they can make the cap work. I would imagine they would have to retain at least 4m, kind of a hefty price for 5 years.

Not that I'm defending the moves, but shouldn't the real criticism be with Sharks management for taking so long to fill the GM spot? Grier had minimal time.

Yeah, I wonder why he fell so hard when he was considered the best goal scorer of the draft by some. I do think they saw some big names dropping and rolled the dice hoping they get one. Bystedt is a huge center though lol, maybe he's the next Barkov.

edit: His eliteprospects description makes it seem like he has the tools to become a scoring machine. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/578760/filip-bystedt

Bill Armstrong: "Hey Mike, the 27th, 34th, and 45th picks for the 11th. What do you say?"
Mike Grier: "Uhhhh....let me think for a sec.You said the 27th, 34th, and 45th picks for the 11th?"
    [snaps fingers at amateur scouts]
Grier: [whispers]: Someone check on capfriendly for who we can get at 11th and 27th
Armstrong: "That is correct but I need to know soon."
Grier: "Alright, just give me a minute to confer with my team and I'll get back to you"
Armstrong: "Okay, talk to you soon."
Grier: "Someone checking ACGMs to see if we should be trading the pick?"
[After 2 minutes of scrambling through ACGMs and Mock drafts and not coming up with anything conclusive]
Girer: "Forget it, I'm calling Bill and taking the deal."
Grier: "Hey Bill, you got yourself a deal"

Blame covid and Bryant Marchment was one of their scouts (not sure if he was an amateur scout). They probably had a list and notes about the players he scouted but he obviously couldn't bat for guys that were on his radar. Grier also just got the job.

No, I don't think I will blame Covid, actually. They were actually able to travel to scout this year and sure as hell did so, and while Bryan Marchment was one of our OHL/NCAA scouts, I'm not sure that his "going to bat" for the guys that were on his radar would've made a lick of difference - not least because to my understanding, most of what he'd been doing for the last few years was on the development side. The decision to trade down was pretty clearly Grier's call, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if we someday found out that Frank Nazar III was on the Sharks' original board and he didn't get drafted by them because he's doesn't fit the mold of "Big and Grit" that Grier likes.

If that's the case then that's unfortunate, and half of the Leafs fan base would love to have him over Dubas.
