In terms of value, I think it's fair. My only curiosity is if CGY will want a young roster player like Sharangovich in place of one of the prospects.

I doubt Flames decide to head into a rebuild. If they did this is a pretty fair price.

Hate to say it but the flames wouldn’t think this is the right return, Matthew is eliteee. Wouldn’t be surprised if they ask for holtz, Mercer, 1st and (Tatar for cap purposes) and if you were the devils you still take that and run..

Agreed here. That's why I think they'd want someone like Sharangovich in that deal.

NJ would be insane to say no. Tkachuk hasn't even hit his prime yet.

They want all the massive payout of a star player without giving up much value back. Hence:

They said [WINGER] would cost [ACGM PRICE] but it turned out to be [REAL-WORLD PRICE].

You aren’t gonna get him without at least giving up holtz, a 1st, and another top prospect and considering flames don’t really need defense right now I’d say it’s another forward prospect that is another good prospect.
Flames would do anything to keep him otherwise even if that means overpaying

An unprotected 2023 1st round pick, plus three 1st round prospects = a smidge more than "not much"

An unprotected 2023 1st round pick, plus two 1st round prospects = historically, an unusually high return for unsigned RFA

An unprotected 2023 1st round pick, plus one 1st round prospects = the likely market for Tkachuk today

My point exactly.

DeBrincat, equivalent to three top-10 picks, less than that

Wingers are always available. Most often cheaper that expected.

Could have just stopped there.
If that is his price, he doesn't get sold.

Since you are talking “historically” what does a more than 100 point rfa get traded for?

Every year, I say this.
Every year, people disagree.
And every year, wingers return less than ACGM expectations.

Wingers grow on trees.

It has been a long time since one was dealt. I believe that last was Alexander Mogilny in 1995 (was 120+ pt winger a season or two before).

He went for a 1st, a solid middle-6 center prospect and a busted / reclamation dman prospect.

All returns are less than ACGM expectations. That's like saying the sky is blue.

The returns for wingers last year was a lot. Toffoli got a haul. Lekhonen went for more than I expected. Rakell went for a 2nd, top goalie prospect and two players, Copp got two 2nds and a TOP prospect. Giroux went for a 1st, 3rd and TOP prospect. These are not cheap prices.

100+ Point wingers don't grow on trees.

(sigh)

Morgan Barron and Owen Tippett are not top prospects. Maybe they once were. Now they are tweeners who face waivers, have to sign standard contracts. They are not the same as Holtz, Mercer, Nemec, etc.

And a late 1st is not same as top-5 pick. Its closer to a high 2nd rounder in value.

Young top-6 centers, #1 goalies, and top-pair dmen are almost never traded. Top-6 wingers get traded all the time. Are always available in UFA pool. They grow on trees.
