Description
Curious to hear opinions on the possibility of the Ducks tendering an offer sheet to Rasmus Sandin.

After signing their all of their RFA’s, the Ducks will need to add somewhere between $6-7 million to hit the cap floor next season. With a majority of the high-end UFA’s off the market, it’s possible the Ducks will need to look elsewhere to meet the salary cap requirements. Defense is an obvious weak spot on the current roster, and Sandin is an intriguing option. The Ducks would get a full season to evaluate Sandin’s play and then have the opportunity sign him to a more reasonable extension next offseason. While $4 million would be an overpay, it could essentially “buy” them a quality, puck-moving defenseman for the next several years.

Looking at the Leafs current salary cap situation, it would be difficult for them to match any offer sheet over $4 million. Even if they were to trade Justin Holl, they would still not have enough cap space to pay Sandin, re-sign Pierre Engvall, and carry a 21-man roster. The Leafs may be forced to take the offer sheet compensation and hope that it winds up being an early 2nd round pick. They also would not be able to offer sheet any of the Ducks’ future RFA’s in retaliation.

Essentially, the Ducks would be trading one of their three 2nd round picks in 2023 for Sandin. Will Verbeek actually submit an offer sheet? Probably not. But it’s an interesting possibility.

They should take that risk they need to get to the cap floor anyway.

I don't think you should expect Sandin to play the right side. But why just a one year offer sheet? Then you have to pay him at 4.2m next season or he has option of being a UFA.
Offer three years, the Leafs couldn't match anyway, if Sandin wants a some security

I was taking the Kotkaniemi approach. Overpay for one year and then offer an extension at a slightly lower AAV. Worst case, you qualify him or trade his rights the next offseason. 3 years just seems a bit too risky at that AAV.

Would be way smarter to trade the 2nd in a deal to acquire a defenseman that actually deserves to get paid 4m AAV this season. Sandin has tons of upside but he's still only got 88 NHL games played.

There are plenty of solid veteran guys available on cap strapped teams that the Ducks could get and slot into the roster for a year or two while the four defensive prospects they drafted in the 1st and 2nd rounds the past two drafts mature. Just to give an example, Brendan Dillon is a guy that would be a perfect fit. Without question they need to replace the physicality that they lost with Manson. Sandin does not do that on top of the fact he's young and still developing.
