2022-2023 After TDL 2023

Description
As it stands, a 23-men Habs roster that would include Dach on a bridge contract around 2.5M AAV, a (unlikely!) healthy Price and without using any LTIR whatsoever would amount to around 85.6M; 3.4 over the cap.

Byron, Drouin and/or Price’s recent health issues might pave the way to a (suboptimal) LTIR relief scenario during the season, but moving a +3M AAV winger with term this summer would be far more efficient, especially since the market for Petry seems rather underwhelming at the moment. Unless the market sees Petry as the consolation prize of the Klingberg sweepstakes; even then, without retention, hard to see how trading Petry this summer could fetch a worthwhile return, considering how thin the Habs are at RHD.

Obviously, shedding Hoffman’s contract would be the optimal target; Armia’s being a close second. At this point, the Habs should consider trading them with incentives (« B+ prospects » à la Struble and/or picks beyond the first 2 rounds next year) if there’s takers.

The optimized return of TDL assets traded with maximum salary retention (Dadonov, Drouin, Byron?, Allen?) and the capacity to absorb expiring UFA cap dumps in return could in all likelyhood compensate selling short on Hoffman/Armia this summer.

Besides targeting the usual suspects of Hoffman/Armia, with Dach now in the picture, could Dvorak spark enough interest to return a (presumably late) 1st 2023+ from a contender needing a cost-controlled middle-6 C? Trading a C rather than winger this summer would be far from optimal however; one more season of Dvorak would likely ease the transition of Dach and, more interestingly, Dvorak under MSL could further raise his value until the Habs’ 1st 2023 pick (hopefully) makes him naturally expandable next summer.

Armia's a known commodity in Winnipeg; would a swap of picks in favour of the Jets be incentive enough to rapatriate him without retention? His 3.4M AAV (until 2024-2025) remains palatable in today's market, which seems to clearly take into account that the cap will rise more substantially after 2024.

I doubt it. The wall you hit with that proposal is Anaheim has a very deep prospect pool so they don't need to be adding quantity of prospects. For the LD kid if he's not better than Lacombe or Thrun or Zellweger what's the point. For the winger the Ducks already have his Northeastern team mate Sam Colangelo who looks like a better prospect.

You'd probably get more interest if the offer was picks. That would spread out the prospect ages rather than clump it up and the Ducks would be free to take any kid they really liked from what ever draft class.

Or you could blow them away with a nice high-end prospect rather than a couple of B-ish kids.

Why are you trying to dump cap, don't the Habs have plenty of cap space?

Unfortunately, no. Well, if we assume Price is heading for LTIR for the entire season (likely at this point), they will have some artificial flexibility at the start of the season. But right now, they can’t afford signing Dach without going over the cap.

I can't see Winnipeg taking 2+ years of Armia as a cap dump and wasting about $7mil on cap space just to move up 2 rounds. It likely costs more to dump Armia than that

Okay, I thought since Anaheim already had 6 picks in the first 3 rounds next year, the Ducks would rather seek former high picks (2nd rounders) on good trajectories (especially Struble) rather than futures.

I wouldn’t dilapidate an « A » prospect as an incentive for taking on 2 years of Hoffman - considering notably that buying him out would remain palatable (1.6M until 2026) - but if the Habs’ (likely high) 3rd round suffices to offload him for « future consideration », I’d pull the trigger, gambling that Dadonov/Drouin/Allen with maximum retention can still provide worthwhile assets for the rebuilding Habs’ crucial 2023 draft.

I added the pick swap because of Armia’s enigmatic gameplay that sometimes shows flashes of brilliance, hoping Jets fans would recognize the sentiment.

Without the swap, would Winnipeg consider MTL’s (likely high) 3rd round pick + Armia for « future consideration »?

I can't see it. The Jets just don't have the cap space to waste.

Don’t the Jets still have +15M left under the cap with basically only Dubois and Appleton to renew? Absorbing Armia’s 3.4M would be very highly manageable.

It’s more a question of what incentive could make it worth it for both parties.

The Habs can keep Armia for now, there’s more opportune cap relief scenarios to explore and a (likely high) 3rd is probably the best offer they can make as incentive to take on the contract without retention.

The Jets are still hoping to contend while Scheifele-Dubois are under control, they’re abysmal on the PK; Armia would fill an actual need, at a palatable AAV for a role player who’s at his best on « cycle lines » and special units. Not a pure cap dump, thus. And the Jets lack a 2nd and a 4th next year, so obtaining a (likely high!) 3rd would help them have more leeway at next year’s draft.

Would be quite ironic that Armia returns back to Winnipeg the same way he arrived in Montreal!

It's possible I guess. It's just that you can find guys that can do what Armia does for less than a mil, so why overpay?
