Backup goalies don't fetch top prospects from teams.

If the Leafs needed to pay this for Allen, there are a lot of backups still available in free agency. Greiss, Halak, Rittich,

You're squeezed, guys. The price is increasing by the minute.

We would be squeezed except lots of options still exist for a backup. Greiss, Halak, Rittich in free agency. San Jose has an extra goalie. Lots of non-competing teams out there to look at. Etc.

The thing about backups is they are relatively easy to find compared to the starting goalie.

Plywood also is available. Do you want to win now or wait another 50 years?

We are talking about a backup goalie. If you need him, you aren't winning now anyway. The Leafs could put Woll in net and still make the playoffs easily.

A first goalie will play 50-55 games, the remainder will be your backup. In the playoffs you want to make sure that if something happens to your first goalie, you still have a chance with your backup.

I guess it's hard to understand when the last time you won a playoff series was in 2003 and a Stanley Cup in 1967.

When was the last time the Habs won a series using their backup?

Oh and I forgot Comrie from my UFA list.

We still remember 2014 when Price was injured and we didn't have a good backup

And was it the backup that stopped you from winning the cup? Of course not. The backup who wasn't good put up a 0.916 save % btw.

You have no clue what happened in that semi-final series against the Rangers.

You should call Mike Palmeteer to see if he's available.

The thing about backup goalies or starting goalies is that they aren’t a starter or a backup until they are. Whose to say that Kallgren isn’t a good enough backup or that he’s just as good or maybe even better than Jake Allen. Only costs 750k too.

I know that Dustin Tokarski put up a 0.916 save % and kept them to under 3 goals a game, including 1 in the 1-0 game 6 they lost the series in. I have a feeling it's not me who has no clue what happened in that series to be calling Tokarski bad.

And because I like fancy stats, Tokarski was the 5th best goalie in the playoffs that year, according to GSAx, and much better than Price's performance.

Price was injured 3:15 into the second period of Game 1, with Montreal trailing 2-0. New York's Chris Kreider broke loose, and on the breakaway he was hit in the shins by the stick of a diving Alexei Emelin. Kreider slid into Price skates up, and Price's right knee and ankle appeared to buckle.

We'll add him to the end of the list. Thankfully the list is long enough that paying this kind of price for Allen is simply not needed. There are lots of options and much better options available.

I didn't think he would play in New Jersey next year and Tatar's contract expires in 2023.

What's the plan on RD, is Ty Smith expendable?

Hamilton, Severson locked in for top-4. Walsh is most likely 3RD to start. Nemec is expected to sign, play in North America (AHL likely to start). Mukhamadullin has been loaned back to Ufa for the KHL season but could come back at end of year. Smith, Bahl, Okhotiuk also candidates. They could also sign a short-term stopgap FA too.
