How do you send a rental+an unwanted contract for a two young players (one with elite potential) and also get picks on top?

You do realize that Car traded DeAngelo and are willing to let Bear go since they don't think they are worth signing just like Hamilton and Faulk before them. So why would they take tanner pearson or even JT Miller.

Carolina has a bunch of UFAs that are walking away from their middle six. There have been trade rumours linked between the Canucks and Hurricanes involving Miller and Necas. The Canucks have also been in contact and have an interest in Bear. With this move, both teams fill needs, and although it is an expensive price for Miller, that is roughly the market value.

CAR also has guys ready for a role on the team from the AHL which is why they’re comfortable letting guys go and not overpaying. And it’s not their philosophy to sign somebody like JT long term.

What legitimate rumors have you seen connecting Canes to Miller?

The market value?

Bear for Pearson is not a one for one, Vancouver needs to add a sweetner.

Necas + the 3 pics is essentially the return for Fiala and DeBrincat combined (a bit less). Miller doesn't hold that much value. Miller is an older version of Fiala essentially and had a bit more points last year in terms of production except he's a pure rental, other two were RFAs, DeBrincat can be seen as a 2 year rental but he has a better PPG and track record than the both of them, and he's a goal scorer.

Many different sources but here is one from the athletic with comments from Hurricanes writer Sarah Civian.

All players involved in the deal are heavily in the trade rumour mill.

Ah so speculation versus credible sources saying the teams are involved in trade discussions around miller and Necas. Much different, but that’s fine. If you go along those lines though you’d also have seen that it’s very unlikely canes would ever extend miller so it’s a one year rental situation in which case the return you have is extremely off balance.

Considering Carolina has been open about them not being high on Bear I would say the value is pretty close for a Pearson-Bear swap.

Of the three players in Debrincat, Fiala, and Miller, Miller has the highest trade value of the three. He can run a powerplay, and play center, and has physically on top of his dominant offense. The Debrincat deal does hurt Miller's value a bit because the Blackhawks sold low but considering a lot of teams view Miller as a center, he is more valuable. On top of that Van can retain salary and make his cap hit 2.65M which would attract any team in the league.

Buddy, I'm not saying this trade is going to break tomorrow or that Friedman is tweeting this out as I'm typing this. I'm simply connecting dots and trying to project moves that make sense or have some realism attached. That's literally what Armchair GM is for. If I was an actual insider I wouldn't be making these to see what Joe average has to comment.

Pearson is essentially dead cap, especially with his NTC. They would rather take a pic for Bear, and get someone in free agency.

I don't know how Miller is the most valuable when DeBrincat is 8th in scoring in the last 5 years. He got traded for the 7th pick, which has quite a bit of value, but his QO next year probably limited the options of who can get him among teams with a high pick. Goal scorers hold a ton of value too, so can't just say because he's a center Miller has more. Even so, the return is far too great.

Necas+Bear+1st for Miller is a much more fair deal, and I don't CAR would be willing to do that.

I can’t wait till Miller is traded for LESS than what Fiala got. There’s a reason he hasn’t been dealt yet, the Canucks are being unrealistic with what they think they can get out of a 30yr old rental.

No chance the Canes consider trading Necas for him one for one, much less add.

Yeah and I’m point out that it doesn’t actually make sense if you connect the dots on the canes side. It’s just not how they operate. Their best offer would treat miller as a rental since they wouldn’t give him a long term deal and since that’s the case they wouldn’t be anywhere near the best off the nucks could get.

Not sure how good that Faber guy is considered to be now, but chances are that he gets dealt at the deadline and gets a better return, but atm pretty sure people are giving them offers similar to the Fiala deal more or less. Perhaps a team that is desperate for a 2C and misses out on all the guys hitting the market might get him during the offseason, but if they can't/won't resign him they aren't paying up for him during the off season.

I like how Guerin just ripped the bandage off with the Fiala trade and took what he thought was the best offer, I think Davidson realized quickly that he needed to do the same with DeBrincat if he wanted to ensure that he lands a high pick. Perhaps Bill Armstrong will do the same with Chychrun during the season, I don't think anyone is desperate enough to pay his ridiculous ask yet. I suspect Chychrun will go from a young dman on a cheap contract with term, to a two year rental on a good deal pretty fast.

Kadri, Malkin, Giroux, R Strome, Trocheck, D Strome are all Cs who might hit the UFA market.

Trade market has Miller and Dvorak at the least. More guys are likely to become available once free agency opens.

Canes aren’t giving up value for a pure rental. That has been the case historically. Miller won’t get an Eichel return, he won’t get more than DeBrincat, and if the Canucks are extremely lucky, he gets slightly more than what Fiala got. Miller is going to be on the wrong side of 30 when he is due for a new deal, and how much he is asking for is way too much for a guy coming off a one hit wonder season.

you understand she is paid to make those stories. Also, she isnt connected at all to the team as far getting reads on player movements. She tried to claim we were also in the guy from the Canucks after the rumors came out about DeAngelo. Then she went into a twitter conniption about the moral fiber of the team. Then she quietly walked back that we were never tied to the Canucks guy. his name is slipping my mind. Either way she has to get news about player movement from other people, she doesnt get it from the team. no one does. Pure speculation on her part.
