If I'm the GM giving up Wahlstom & a 1st I throw it to Minnesota to see if it gets me Kevin Fiala before I bite on this. Varlamov with full retention should be worth a late 1st/early 2nd so the very best reading on this trade is 2 years of William Nylander is going to cost a recent 1st round pick, a lottery pick this year, and the value of a late 1st/early 2nd. Fiala will cost less to acquire and not much more on a cap hit, with the added bonus of probably being a 6-7 year deal instead of just 2.

No from the Isles.

It does not make sense to trade Wahlstrom without seeing what he can do with Trotz gone.

Reports are all Canada teams are on Varly's No Trade list, this is not confirmed but been rumored by a few Isles writers. Lou also doesn't want to trade Varly, but keep him to mentor Sorokin.

It’s an overpay for a winger two years from UFA status. Getting Wally and Varly without retention seems like a lot. Giving up the 13th pick as well is insane.

This is... an annoyingly and worryingly feasible thing to happen to the Rangers. No way they can (or should) match that, but the compensation would be awful. Really a lose lose for the Rangers lol.

Quick reminder that the last five guys who went 13th overall were Suzuki, Dellandrea, Knight, Jarvis and Coronato. At least two of the guys on that list are as good or will be as good as Nylander.

In Dellandrea’s case Farabee, Smith and Miller went soon after him. Knight was followed by Caufield, Krebs, Newhook and Tomasino.

I don't see Lou acquiring Nylander but I read that the Islanders need more offense and Nylander is a first line forward on any team except the Leafs so he would be a great fit playing alongside Barzal. And I don't see the Leafs taking back much money in the trade unless it's a for proven starting goalie, and the Islanders have two. That's why the Islanders make sense for a trading partner for the Leafs.

The Isles need a top-6 forward for sure. But trading Wahlstrom does not make sense as he should be given a fair shot this year with Barzal and a new coach.

The Isles will first be looking to move on from Bailey, who while productive is redundant and does not have a role on the team anymore. With the extra space that could open up the Isles need to add a 2LD, with Bolduc/ Salo taking over the 3 LD role. Most likely Lou is not trading Varly unless at the TDL the Isles are out of the playoff picture. Depending on the cap that is left Isles would be looking at having Bellows and the 1st as trade pieces or they go into next year looking like this (depending on UFA signings as I would like to take a run at Nichushkin):

Beau-Barzal-Wahlstrom
Lee-Nelson-Palmeri
Parise-Pageau-Bellows

I agree that the two teams can line up (if Varlamov waives his NTC for Toronto), I just question the return here. It's generally thought that the #13 pick & one of Wahlstrom or Aatu Raty could be enough to get Kevin Fiala out of Minnesota (and then presumably signed to a long-term deal in the $7-8M AAV range), so it feels like it's a hefty price to offer that package *plus* Semyon Varlamov with full retention for 2 years of Willie Nylander. They're the same age and have nearly identical production over the past 2 season (Fiala: 179 pts in 196 GP; Nylander: 181 in 200) so it's hard for me to justify giving that much extra for a guy with less term.

^ Exactly this. Isles should get something else to sweeten the deal. Or get another team to retain on Varly and have TOR pay for it
